Sorry for this stupid question but is that really possible to ambushing a large forces like a whole roman legion?i mean there must be a lot of scout unit surrounding the Army right?so how did the attack forces stay stealth?i mean if you are willing to ambush a large force you must have quite a number of troops right?so actually how do they hide themselves?for example like Battle of the Teutoburg Forest the german tribe have like 12000 to 32000 troops, how is that possible for them to hide without being exposed before the fight?may be someone could solve my little problem? sorry for bad English
In the ambush of the Teutoburg Forst many scouts where Auxilia-troops of the romans (they were like local foreign soldiers) which were switching sides, they were killing the native roman scouts first. Arminius was the leader of the Auxilia-trooups and he was also the leader of the german troops. He was able to convince several german clans to work together under his command. As the romans lost their scouts there were pretty much blind. But yes, the germans needed a lot of warriors in this battle.
With the help of Woden they won that day!
Teutoburger Wald was a worst-case scenario; An extended convoy march, lax security, blinded scouts, an enemy commander familiar with Roman Army doctrine, restricted ground, an unusually disciplined and determined enemy.
Many of the ambushes during the Crusades was due to the lack of scouts and the widespread use of mounted nomads, who were armed, equipped and used the doctrines similar to that of the Cumans.
