Is it possible to level reading to 14?

I’m coming up against a shortage of books that I haven’t read yet, but I’m only at 9 reading skill. It’s becoming extremely difficult to find any new books for my character to read, and since you only gain experience the first time you read a book… well…

So, where can I find books aside from scribes and a few millers? I’ve even broken into the monastery in search of books, but I’ve only found two that I haven’t read thus far.

I want 14 reading skill for the Cartographer perk, which unlocks all locations of interest (caves, et cetera) on my map.

You might try reading in churches, usually at images it gives a read prompt t to display backer names. Might be worth testing to see if you gain any xp from it. Also I know is usually try and maximize my reading efficiency reading on beds but that makes you finish a book faster, so another interesting test would be to try and read a book with no reading bonus (so the slower longer time to finish a book) and see if you get the same xp as reading a book with full reading bonus. I’ve tried reading non skill books but you don’t have to study them and I didn’t notice any increase to xp. Let me know what you find

If you really want cartographer earlier, you can always mod the game. I honestly find that that perk is a bit immersion breaking myself, so I would not recommend it for the immersion player (which may or may not be you). Just saying.

Edit: Currently i’ve got ~100 hours and my reading is at 15.

edit2: Also, I find that one of the perks (i forgot the name of it) will gradually increase your reading skill whilst you sleep. At least it did for me. So I got to 15 without reading any churches or the likes. Not sure if bug or otherwise though.

From the way I’m reading the description, that perk you’re referring to sounds utterly useless. If it does indeed cause reading skill to gradually increase with time, I’ll definitely give it a shot, though.

He’s talking about the perk avid reader which reads the most read book when you are sleeping or resting. It doesn’t continue reading the book if you’ve finished it. Reading all the crosses and road signs also raises it.

You can also find a trainer and pay to boost your skill level

You can try alchemy recipes and skill books that you can find at some blacksmiths, hunters, apothecaries, and horse traders

Horse Traders sell books? I did not know this been ignoring their stores in my hunts

I think I’ve found one or two books about horsemanship…
reading maps helps too (not sure about this)

If you have a good stealth and lockpick you can try steal the varyhard chest from the apothecary and get all of his recipes.
