Jousting, archery and points of no return in pass times and mini games

So who else thinks that Jousting, archery challenges and other pass time activities and mini games would make this awesome world even more immersing?

Jousting could be used predominantly as a means of strengthening your horse and horse combat abilities and could take form as a whole tournament structure. Also the performance of the player could effect the way the public view them and could benefit the player with notoriety and help to increase their skills as a bard.

The same could apply for archery. The player could perform Robin Hood-esque tricks and stunts, such as fine shooting distant targets or small objects off NPC’s both on horse and on foot to improve their skills as an archer and also charm the public.

Furthermore, this could offer points of no return, for example asking a passer by in a crowded area to take part in a trick where the player shoots an apple out of his hand. If the player was to miss and shoot the npc’s hand this would ultimately effect not only how the people view you, but also what actions will be taken against you and could permanently disrupt that npc’s abilities to perform their daily routines and tasks such as work etc. which could have a knock on effect. If he can no longer work and earn money, his family could fall apart or starve, leading to him seeking revenge as form of a random encounter, the potential for this type of interactivity could greatly immerse a player and show them a real sense of responsibility, thus adding realistic pressure and making such feats heroic when performed successfully.

I believe that would make for some fun and interesting game play.

Because Henry is a blacksmith or at least the son of one I don’t think we will have any occasion to joust in the story, at least not in act 1. The archery sounds a little more plausible but I don’t know.

About pass time minigames, I’ve heard some rumors about a dice game.
I was thinking maybe adding a specific “weapon proficiency” for each weapon type may work well together with some “sparring” mini-game that again also would weave well together with tourney competitions such as jousting and melee.
Archery competitions would be interesting as well. As you mentioned, both practice and competitive for prizes.

We’ve seen the smithing/sharpening mini-game. Gambling as rumored would be interesting… Hunting competitions maybe? Whoever brings home the biggest game.
Bar brawling, bard instrument playing of some sort… I’m still trying to think of more

Bar brawling would be so epic in first person!

Yeah, Jousting sounds a little too “off” the context… being a sport reserved only for the nobles, I just can’t see it fitting in…on the other hand, knights and warriors of all sorts participate on various “hand-to-hand”, swords and others… the archery though, seems perfectly fit…an amazing idea of yours Charlie! Hope the guys at Warhorse put some effort on this one!

I agree with you Paladin, would be awesome! But a REAL BRAWL, not like Skyrim. People shouting, cheering and things flying!

Yeah, you should be able to pick up items and just throw them around in bar brawls

Hunting competitions, now that does sound right up my street, losing myself in the lush forests hunting bears and boars, I could get used to that!

The jousting will (I hope) be in that tournament mode that will be in from one of the stretch goals. Hopefully it’s not just melee combat stuff.

Yes agreed, the 8th Screenshot in seems to confirm bar brawling…to an extent

About that…hunting also is another “noble” activity… you probably would be killed for hunting the animals in the Lord’s Fief. Except if you are a professional hunter on his service…THAN it would be acceptable. NOT TO MENTION AWESOME!

Exactly! Imagine if the people in this screenshot just stop doing what they’re doing and start cheering and betting! My god, it would be AWESOME! Please WARHORSE! PLZ!!!

Talking about poaching? We’ve seen hunting being a thing in videos. Hunting were done by… Hunters… And trappers… Not only nobles.
Edit: Of course there was some times restrictions by law that the Lords decided in case they were getting greedy and planning feasts. But game hunting competitions in medieval time was not necessarily a nobleman’s activity, not before 1700’s and forth.

Yes I can picture that scene perfectly, maybe you could accidentally push your opponent into a table, spilling beer on people and causing a mini riot, that is probably a bit over ambitious though

Yes, but they’re just videos. I’m talking about Historical Accuracy. Yes, hunters and trappers… but for food…for the nobles. Peasants only eat what they produce (in most cases, vegetables). The “Hunting Sport” was reserved only for the nobles. And hunting (for Peasants) is a severe crime, punished with death (if the lord is pissed with his wife:D) or some kind of refunding (more tax payment, free-of-charge work on the Lord’s house or even some peasant’s daughter material:wink:)

Why not? We can dream, my friend!

It all depends on the laws of the lands. A lot of places actually had legal hunting.
And do you think hunters and trappers had their work for nothing? Those who hunting for the nobles.

In mainland England it was illegal to hunt the Kings deer, not every animal. But in a lot of other countries there was a sense of pride in hunting for all.
I don’t think anyone could imagine wolf hunting being illegal in medieval times, except of course it would have to be of a pagan nature of some sort.
I believe we saw a boar being shot in the trailer. Question is if boar hunting is considered poaching.

You are mostly correct there @thomasthelord but the lord’s fief was a limited space it usually was big enough to just include the rare game and be within a certain distance of the castle but hunters and traders left that specific vicinity in most cases often on small wagons to bring their game back to the locals as a barter item, along the thoughts of jousting though it was limited to nobles which were knights although uncommon not just nobles became knights, although it is highly romanticized today in books and movies such as a knight’s tale with heath ledger nothing I view was impossible because not only can we not be sure to this day because we weren’t there but most stories are based off the smallest sliver of truth in all aspects. So since it does show on the site that becoming a knight is possible that specific thing therein shows that to some extent henry can or will become a noble to some degree, because as stated earlier only nobility can attend the proper institutions that eventually lead to a man becoming knighted. I will however point out that becoming a knight of the realm was typically a lifetime event you started at a very young age as a page learning the tools that could lead you to a knights path this also could lead you to being a scholar however because the institutions were all encompassing they taught you how to fight how to appear in regalia with dignity how to read and write and most importantly at the time dealing with respect and honour in the company of your noble peers. so as you can see becoming a knight was a very lengthy and time consuming process that is hard to compress because it essentially was breeding a life and lifestyle as well as a code for those learning to follow for the rest of their lives.

I’ll take the plunge and give that to you. Your answer was amazing. I really haven’t thought that particular case. Yes, indeed, some countries (especifically the Nord cultures) take certain “pride” about the hunting of animals. I believe in the case of the game it would be explained to us in a sort of rule or law. Or none of them and hunting will be legal.

YES, EXACTLY! To become a Knight is a very rough, tough and hard “quest”(if you will) that only can be possible if the guy in th example was trained since the early days of his young life. I also agree with you in the case of “turning into a knight”; if the game allows it (for story-line purposes, or simply something that is achieved)…well? WHY THE HELL NOT? Knight it IS!!!
