Holding the block button is giving you a block, but the direction is one aspect to get it right.
Also it’s important to note that the timing matters as well, because a perfect block gives you the opportunity to counter-attack, so you should rather get used to train your timing. 
So holding the block button will block everything, but blocking at the right time gives a counter attack. Did I read that right?
maybe even at the right moment. he said you still have to block the right direction, just speculating, but i think that is probably one aspect of an effective block, which opens up a counter attack.
also, in theory, medieval techniques, the counter attack happens before or after the opponent strikes, i am supported in my belief this will be right by video where a man is stabbed in the face before he could complete his swing. thank you.
Exactly! Plus keeping the blocking button pressed the whole time will consume stamina over time.
