Levelling up equipment

Just please no Damascus steel. It’s overkill.

I hope there will be many ways of customizing and improving your armor aswell. In most games, you create an armor or the different armor parts and that’s it.

Personally I’d prefer to be switching weapons only in situations where it makes sense from the story’s point of view. Like if I become a soldier I switch out my peasant’s knife or cudgel or whatever for a spear and shield or some such appropriate weapon for my financial status. Then when I eventually become a knight and and find myself propelled into the upper echelons of society I finally gain the wealth and privilege to carry a sword. Given how expensive this would be I would then spend the rest of the game with that same weapon, provided I don’t lose it through cruel circumstance. Sure I could sometimes use different weapons like a poleaxe or a lance, but my sword would stay with me throughout instead of me constantly changing it out for another sword that’s a tiny bit better. I’m a bit fed up with equipment grind in RPGs.

Fair point, but if i remember correctly, there was something about NOT implanting long weapons like spear into combat system. Sword was secondary weapon, you need something like axe or mace to use it effectivly against armor.
There should be a lot of options for customizing your weapons in game and there should be lot of different types of weapon with different animations, but no grinding and endless comparing of stats. Choosing a weapon should be matter of preference, not a numbers…

Talking about weapons, how many weapon types will there be?
I’m a big fan of spears/halberds, I loved using them in Mount & Blade and Dark Souls but most RPGs just seem exclude spears. Will spears be in the game?

One of the developers told me that there will be two types of polearms, but he didn’t specify, how they actually look like. They were not part of the weapon showcase because they’d use so much vertical space.

“I believe there are two pole (spear type) weapons in the showcase. They were cut to save some vetical space.”

Both mentioned games have a great combat system. But I would expect something different from Kingdome Come. I heard something about excluding spears, because they could be overpowered. Sadly it is true, because spear is not only longer than anything else, but also incredibly fast, if wielded properly. I would also like to see these weapons ingame…

I don’t think the spears would be so overpowered. Proper use of a shield & short weapon can negate the reach of the spear.
@Yuusou Amazing: Nice, I guess we’ll get more detailed information later.

It may negate reach, but the real problem is swiftness of the spear, especially when you are two-handing the weapon.

But I think, we should distinguish between combat in battle (less space around) and duels. I would definitely bet on the guy with a spear in a duel.

Well I think that there is so many types of swords made of steel  Broad sword, bastard sword, simple one hand sword, sax, two-hand sword and many others (I would name more, I am just not sure, how it is in english :-))
So there might be even more sword than in Skyrim (which differed only in material it was made from) and you can still have only steel - just as in a real world. And needed to be added - It is not the sword who delivers the killing blow!

how will this work for bows?

The high tier backers are getting a real one, not an ingame one.

I think that everything will be made as realistic as possible. Thus, sharpening your blade won’t affect its use so much. Of course, there can be a huge difference between two swords of the same type. A cheap sword would not be as balanced and light as an expensive swordsmith masterpiece, making it less effective when performing fencing maneuvers.

Sorry for the real-sword reply, the forum is still a bit of a pain in the ass to use.
Speaking of reinforcements I don’t think this is the way to go. When you craft a sword, there is really nothing you can do to reinforce it except reforging it.

Speaking of unlocking new weapons - I don’t think that guys from warhorse would not let you to fight with whatever you find from the start of the game on, meaning unlocking new weapons is not the way either. I would like to see it as it is in the real world. You can get a cheap sword and an expensive sword. The more valuable the sword is, the better its stats are. (or is it vise versa? )

If I know Dan and guys from warhorse good enough, this is possibly the way they have chosen, more or less. How does this work in real life? Every sword goes dull, the better the steel, the slower the process. You can’t reinforce a sword in real life, you can make it better balanced by adjusting or changing a pommel. Sharpening the blade is of course not as difficult task as rebalancing the sword, so it would need a less skilled craftsman.

By the 15th century swords where a common weapon that was massproduced and used by even poor footsoldiers.
So setting vise it is not a problem if you get a sword early one.

Basically the “level” of a weapon or piece of armor can in my opinion be based on a number of factors.
Material - are they good or bad?
Abilities of the smith - this can both effect the durability and “damage” but also things like balance. A poorly balanced sword is a lot slower to use than a well balanced one.
Both should effect damage, speed, durability…

The same for armour. a cheap munition breastplate made of cheap iron and massproduced should simply not be as effective in protecting you as a well made steel breastplate. And the cheep one should also have a higher penalty for wearing armor than one that made to measure.
(note: a full suit of 15th century plate should only weight 25-30kg so yes you can get up if you fall and you don’t to be lifted up on you horse… but it still do limits you movements in some ways. and armor not made for you is a lot worse than armor that fits)

levelling up the sword in a style of SWORD +2 or sth. is boring.

I’d prefer to have the ability, to customize your weapons later on or even make your own sword. Something like using different metals, different smithing styles, customising the grip and engraving the blade… That’s way cooler.

But most likely I would use a bow or a crossbow as my primary weapon. Therefore I’d like to see some upgrading or forging options there as well. (Like another string, different ways of the wood processing, another trigger and and and…)
Also having to replace the strings after X-Shots, would also add some nice realistic options!

Agree with you here, it would be silly if they wouldn’t let you pick everything you can get your hands on. The unlocking would have to be made, for example, through environment. I.e. you are more likely to find a pike inside a castle, or on battlefield, than a sleepy starting village.

Don’t really know that much about swordsmithing, so appreciate your insight. I wasn’t sure how the reinforcing would be done in reality, though I have had my share of TV and games to theorize it should be possible one way or another. Making the blade easier to handle through rebalancing and therefore raising the quality does make sense.

I can imagine repairing the sword, maybe even changing the whole blade, but reinforcing it doesn’t really seem possible to me. But I like the idea of customizing single parts of the weapon to your desires. Changing the guard type would definitely have some impact on how you use the sword. I would also love to have the ability to do some purely visual changes like decorations on the guard or inserting gems. And stuff you made yourself would definitely have to have your inscription on them! That would be a crazy little detail. Imagine finding your inscription on a sword that you have been ambushed with!

+1 vote for giving us option to create some customized and personal weapon.

If the weapons gonna have some stats, maybe creating one can be something like “gather that and that material and then after forging, the weapon gets those and those random stats” , what do you think?
