Literature, film and other suggestions taking place in the same era

Release date is still quite far away, but we can shorten the waiting by good books, films and even comics from the same era, which can let us taste the atmosphere and the mood of that times. So if you have any suggestions, go on. Here are mine:

The Hussite Trilogy by Andrzej Sapkowski (the famous author of the Witcher Saga)

  • it is consist of Narrenturm, Warriors of God, Lux perpetua
  • the background of the story is set in Bohemia and Silesia during the beginning of Hussite revolution - events immediately following the background story of KC-D
  • Unfortunately it seems like the book hasn’t been translated to English yet

Bernard Cornwell’s books set in the period are always great, with ‘The Grail Quest’ being a favourite of mine.

Sounds like a good read. I hope it gets translated some day soon.

I just finished reading The Name of The Rose by Umberto Eco. It’s a murder mystery set in a monastery during the 14th century. There are a lot of similarities to Kingdom Come (no magic, historical accuracy), but it has a much smaller scope than the game. Definitely check it out if you don’t mind long paragraphs of deeply philosophical dialogue. Its worth reading. There was also a movie adaptation starring Sean Connery that I haven’t seen yet, but I hear is pretty good.

I heard The Duellists is a very realistic depiction of sword combat, though it places somewhere in early 1800’s. Haven’t seen it myself outside of a youtube clip, but I’m pretty sure it’s worth noting if you’re interested on this stuff in general.

The Name of The Rose is fantastic book. I remember spending hours upon hours to plot the monastery and library on checkered paper (or other castles inspired by description of the monastery)

The Name of the rose is a great book, but unfortunately it takes place a lot sooner. If I may recommend some specialized publication, I would definitely go for a book by Johan Huizinga - The Autumn of the Middle Ages. It is a major historical research focused on evereyday life in middle-age. It may add some flavour to the game

The Knights of the Cross from Henryk Sienkiewicz is quite good. The story is from the late 14th century and culminates in the Battle of Grunwald.Full of intrigue, betrayal and romance. Great book .

In Czech rep. wrote Petr Čornej. I recommend.

Kingdom of Heaven is a super film, make sure you watch the 3 hour Directors Cut. Another great Ridley Scott film.

I have this awesome film, it really captures sword play in it’s brutal, exhausting reality. The fight in the cellar when they are both too exhausted to fight and just holding eachother up. Amazing Ridley Scott film.

Everything from Henryk Sienkiewicz (Knights of the Cross, With Fire and Sword,
). Or Sir Walter Scott maybe - like Quentin Durward

If you’re more into CE history, there are some nice works available in Czech, like Jan Klapste’s Promena Ceskych zemi ve stredoveku (Change to the Czech lands in the middle ages). I highly recommend this, dunno if it’s available in other languages or not.

There are also some really good Czech films. For example several films about Hussite movement by Otakar Vávra (what a coincident that the KC-D creator’s second name is also Vávra ):

But my favourite are films by Frantiơek Vláčil. Particularly:

Those films are not exactly from the same era, but their setting is in the medieval Bohemia. I personally like the strong atmosphere of both films. Especially Markéta Lazarovå is really good. Whether there is some Czech film worth watching, this is it. It was also declared as the best Czech film ever by Czech film academy. The story is bit complicated and the whole film is rather about the dark medieval atmosphere than about the plot itself. You can definitely get it with English subtitles. I will definitely suggest the “Grail Quest” series by Bernard Cornwell as another user has mentioned before. It’s set in the 1350ish time frame so much earlier than this game is set, but Cornwell has such a fantastic insight into the time period as well as a incredible voice for adventure it’s definitely worth reading.

the thread is for works in the same era. the duelists weapon and technique are completely different from early 15th century. kingdom of heaven is 12th century

Also there can be found another very interesting czech film about witchcrafting called The Witch Hunt (Kladivo na čarodejnice). But from 17th centrury. It’s available via Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeYCguOh7t0
And I recommend you to watch this film sequence 2:00-3:30

I don’t know about the exact period of the setting, but I recomend the movie “The 13th Warrior” and the book it’s based on “Eaters of the Dead” by Michael Crichton. That’s one hel of a good story, even if it gives it’s “twist” away a bit too soon.

You may like short story I wrote few years ago that takes place in Czech Kingdom around 1400. Czech language only, sorry. http://www.dracidoupe.cz/index.php?rub=prispevky_precti&co=clanky&id=4209&precist=ano&skin=dark

Azincourt is another of Bernard Cornwell’s great books (Agincourt in the US). It follows an English archer’s travels as part of an English Army in France leading up to The Battle of Agincourt itself.
