So, Witcher 3 really impressed with the interesting side quests that surpassed the main questline, so I was wondering how exactly side-quests will be handled in act 1?
Will they be boring fetch-quests or interesting quests with interesting characters and scenarios?
Daniel Vavra always said that the quests will have a meaning and an impact on the world. If you haven’t played the alpha (I assume because of no forum title), then you’re missing out on how the quests are designed. All quests that exist right now, could be seen as side quests. None of them are part of the main story (so spoiler free now for a full fresh story later on at full release) and each quest has different ways to be solved. That means, there can be simple fetch quests, but how you get that item is up to you and the character’s skills. This “how” might involve other characters into the quest line and therefore change the outcome for even more people. Depending on how you solved one quest you might be able to open another quest line. I think there’s a lot of work ahead of all the quest writers and scripters to get it working like this.
What will also be included are quests, where you need to meet a certain person at a certain place at a certain time. If that won’t happen, because the person gets killed or you’re not around, you can’t continue the quest. It’s not like they give you unlimited chances to start a quest, but there might be certain characters who give you another chance for a quest, just because they’re nice to you.
My problem with it would be that some of them might feel too inconsequential and maybe even trivial. I know there’s no room for epic, significant quests at every turn, but maybe some quests like finding a camp of deserters and deciding how to respond would be interesting. Or maybe encountering some sort of violent execution about to happen and once again, reacting how you see fit. Of course there have to be small fetch quests and inconsequential personal matters, but some larger scale side-quests would also be nice. It would be especially great if you could encounter these things while riding along the road to complete the main storyline and then deciding whether or not to intervene.
Just a thought.
This… I think I read or heard Daniel Vávra say that he wants to do these “encounter” quests similar to Red Dead Redemption.
He mentions the RDR in the E3 presentation video
But I think I heard even more detailed description of the events he talks about in that video.
Though I don’t know where.
That’d be great. Especially if they were really morally gripping and hard to solve. Maybe a deserter who ran away to support his family and got caught or something similar.
