Making potions

Just curious, how many people actually succeeded in making a potion successful and of you very special people (yes, I think you have some tremendous perseverance), how many think it is fun to do?
I just don’t get it, what’s the point of that silly alchemy?

I haven’t failed at a potion yet, but it’s my lowest-leveled skill (6, all others 12-19). In the beginning, it was much cheaper to make Savior Schnapps than buy them. If economy was balanced a bit differently, the incentive to brew rather than buy would be higher. I wouldn’t say “fun”, per se…but I do find the whole minigame interesting and more engaging than the auto-combine window in every other game.

But then again, I never play an alchemist, even in the Witcher series.

I love the alchemy.

Why? Really, why?

Because I like to cook. I am a lab rat in real life too lol.

I used to work for a aerosol company.

potions are ok. interesting. use autobrewing a fair bit. that said, have never seen bane and poison work their magic. nighthawk(vision) is interesting but don’t get a lot of mileage out of it. dollmaker worked like a charm on Bernard’s cousin (non-lethal, disabling). use cockerel once in a while because i dislike ‘wasting time’ by sleeping

my main issue is that i can’t (pay to) upgrade Miller Peshek’s place to include an alchemy bench… not having that makes potionmaking inconvenient. ride in town at night to make potions… meh

like the KCD’s more basic approach to alchemy relative to skyrim which had a ton of combinations

just wish making potions and providing to town (eg via apothecary or general trader) had an impact on town and its people

I make vitality potions and sell them for good money.

Okay, I get that.
I know nothing about cooking and only theory about lab research. Still, can’t image this alchemy resembles real life alchemy (wich I find interesting - again - in theory).
But, already surprised that there are players out there that like this aspect of the game. Was the point of my sincere question.

Agree on that last bit; making potions impact town.
But than again; feel a lot for the purpose of reading and would like that this could have a bigger impact as well (but than again, learning to read in a couple of hours, in game hours that is even. So much for realism.).

Honestly loving alchemy. Makes me feel like I’m actually mixing potions rather than just selecting 2 items to smash together for an instant result. Only failed the first potion I ever tried due to not knowing what the dish was for. The system seems fairly forgiving in terms of timing from personal experience. 3 tugs to start boil, 1 tug after that for each turn works well for me. With more potions under your belt you’ll get to the point of not needing an hourglass at all.

I just buy all the saviour schnapps every time I talk with an innkeeper. Alchemy is very boring for me to do.

Spoiler - monastery quest

During monastery quest, I made a bunch of potions to kill time esp cockerel because I was a night owl foraging for any useful stuff I could find.

Brought some stuff when started and used up monastery’s supply. Resold some to monk with shady past to get lockpicks, etc

It’s a thoughtful and appreciated effort that could use some tweaks. Wish the oil, etc actually poured out of the vessels (sometimes it doesn’t) and the ingredients actually resembled their real life counterparts (chamomile isn’t black) when dropped in pot and mortar

That bugs me to no end. Some stations have the herbs dropping to the floor rather than the pot too

The fact that already more than one person enjoys this potion making stuff, it blows my mind.
Tried again in the game to do it, maybe I should just give it a change. No, hate it. Rather buy all I need in game…

I don’t see what the problem is? You just read the recipe and follow it. OP you’re not just randomly trying to make potions, are you? If you speak to the Apothecary about learning to read he tells you there’s a Scribe in Uzhitz who can teach you to read. Once you have done that, then you can clearly read the instructions.

Some people like it some don’t. Such is life ya know.

I ķnow I need to read the formula out of the book.
It seems simple to follow up the steps (although makes me feel I’m waisting my life…), but it never works with me.

I do not have any major problems and don’t mind “rolling my own” and only had 2 fails and made 3 unknown potions by accident.
I have my skill up to the point I can auto brew 3 at a time.
Keeps me in bain (am on PC so it becomes the deadlier pro-bain), padfoot, night hawk, preserver and rage potion and Others I find need of.
I follow the directions and heat as stated above, Wait for the fire to die out before the next step boiling ( unless it says not to) and then pour into a vial.
I don’t usually use the still; tried once to see and got it to work but I’ll stick to the simpler pour into vial method as it always works.
your going to hafta make 2 potions for 2 quests anyway one for in the monastery and one for Merhojed quest.
