Master Strikes bug?

Hey all, firstly I’d like to say that I’m loving the game.

I’ve searched the forums and Google but I can’t find any reference to this particular bug.

I’ve completed the Ginger in a pickle quest and Cpt Bernard has returned to Rattay. I’ve trained my sword level, strength, agility, main level and defense up to 10 via training with the Cpt.

When I try to learn the master strikes riposte with the sword, the training will not complete. The Cpt will do his usual sparring with me until he’s happy with what he’s seeing, then he proceeds to teach me the master strikes. However, at this point he just keeps performing the master strikes move on me without me actually learning the move. After about 5 minutes it says sword training complete, but I’ve still not learned master strikes.

Has anyone else had this issue and found a way around it?
I’ve waited a few days in game, done a few other side quests, done additional real sword sparring with the Cpt, but still unable to learn master strikes.

Any help is appreciated, it could be something I’m missing rather than a bug.

Playing on Xbox, so not able to input console commands etc.

it’s not a skill you unlock, he just explains how to do master strikes. you need to deflect your opponents sword at the angle he is throwing out his swing. if you defend at the right moment in the right direction you wil do a master strike. Depending on your warfare skill ( but not sure if this skill has anything to do with the fact you will do a master strike or not)

Cheers for responding.

Unfortunately he doesn’t change during the master strikes part of the training, he just continually defends my attacks, he doesn’t attack me so I can learn the move.

If I remember rightly, on a previous save, he allowed me to attack him, then he attacked me until I perfected it 3/3 times.

oh okay so your stuck in an endless battle with him? I think it lasted pretty long with me ass well. try to clinch him a lot and get free hits until he thinks you’re ready. Maybe its because your sword/warfare skill is too low at that moment?

just wild guesses here

Yeah it’s an endless battle (for about 5 minutes at least, at which point it just says training complete).

The training starts and he says ‘let’s see what you’ve got’ or something to that effect. After a few minutes sparring he says ‘good, now let me teach you about master strikes’ or something to that effect.
At this point he just parrys and repostes everything but will not attack me. After a few minutes the training stops and I have to try it again.
My skills in swords, defence, strength, agility, warfare etc are all around 10 after doing this master strikes training so many times lol.

Also, in order to use them properly you have to train combat and defense skills too I believe? (+the initial training with the captain)

Ignore these replys… I have reported this bug to support and sent my save files. After 1.3 on consoles master strike training on new playthrough is indeed bugged. Before 1.3 i could complete axe, mace and sword master strike training straight away (as long as i had suffienct skill in said weapon level, or he says something along the lines of ‘get better with the weapon first’). For me the axe and mace is bugged and you cannot complete it which will eventually time out the training. Sword masterstrike, i was able to complete but not use in combat outside of the master strike lesson with bernard.
I dont know if this has been fixed since 1.4 on pc but if not this is going to be a long wait to get fixed considering we still have to wait for 1.3.4
Edit - defense and warfare stats do not make a difference in being able to complete the training.

Cheers 5iron, that sounds like the issue I have.

I was able to complete the sword strikes initially, then the game crashed about 10 mins later and I hadn’t saved.

When I got back to the training it just times out now.

Well, it is tough to do it indeed, but perhaps it is a coincidenc,e but will improving defence skill, I see it beeing more easy to actually doing a proper counter attack, but maybe that was just a simple coincidence.

Sadly, this is a bug, not a training issue. My Henry is above 15 in all areas of combat, and I am still unable to perform master strikes, even after training.

The training, when successful, is supposed to give you a new perk, much the same as feint and dodge appear in your skill list. PC players have confirmed this by using console commands to give themselves the master strike perks for each weapon, so they’re there, it’s just the scripting to actually give it to you is bugged.

Hopefully a fix will be coming for this.

This isnt that tough. Pre patch i could do it all the time no problem from day one and 1.3 hits making mace and axe uncompletable and sword doable but not outside of combat. I said if you’re playing on a save from pre 1.3 it will still work but not on a new playthrough :frowning: unfortunately i saved over both playlines after 1.3 :stuck_out_tongue: I suppose it adds a new level of difficulty in combat since every enemy can do it but me hehe especially since kcd has been made even easier after patchs…

It has, and yes it was quite broken for many people during the whole of 1.3. It was the chief fix I was waiting for with 1.4 and I wasn’t disappointed.

It is however a skill you must learn. I can perform them almost without fail in general, but in no case before you do the training for them with Bernard can I perform them (on my 3rd restart here). A sort of hidden perk I gather, from the mods that fixed the problem while it was a problem.

I think the description goes under the perfect block description ? Not 100% sure on this mind

The description there is a little confusing; someone has a thread on the subject elsewhere. It says you can perform a riposte after a perfect block but that’s not how it works functionally. Riposte/master strike is performed automatically if you block fast enough, i.e. before the green shield icon appears right when they begin their attack.

Not sure but since last patch(es), It seems really more difficult to use it, even with the captain while training.
