The third cage does not appear with a captured nightingale in it. The waypoint points towards the location where the cage was set down but there is no interaction with an object possible there as the cage with the captured bird is missing.
Mission in completable.
Repeatable.
Is there any news on if they plan to fix this quest.
Would love to complete this quest and give myself more space in my inventory.

I have just completed the quest without issue. First two birds catched at dusk, third at dawn, had to wait full hour before successful catch. It was on PC version 1.2.2
Skalgrin, I think the bug appear (well, the cage disappearing) when you put down the cage and save, then quit. When you reload the game, the quest marker are there, but no cage around. I think the game suppress all object on the ground when you quit. (Either by quitting, or reload another save)
Could be I did not save not quit, but I have slept through the night in nearby bandit camp. Possibly that was reason why it worked for me.
