I’ve been playing on a six year old, i7-870 based computer. While I’d upgraded the memory to 16gb it was a pcie2.0 motherboard connecting to a gtx 970 with 8 lanes.
The new machine is i7-5820k based, also with 16gb. Preliminary OC’ing has it working reliably at 4.2ghz, but crashed at 4.4ghz - probably needs more volts.
KCD seems to have much better frame rates. I kicked the graphics level up to very-high and increased the vegetation distance a bit.
Not sure how much of the better frame rate is due to the gtx 970 having 16 lanes of pcie3.0 and how much is due to having a hex-core hyper-threaded cpu of much more recent vintage. gpu-z shows the bus interface is positively loafing along. Watching cpu usage on the windows performance monitor shows that usually there are 5 or 6 hyper-threads active - but sometimes I’ve seen 10 or 11 hyper-threads going. Apparently KCD can use more cores. I was seeing all time high (for me personally) frame rates when more threads were active, between 40 and 50 fps (still not what many would call good, but much better than before).
I also set up AHCI for my sata3 ssd, so there’s a lot less time spent waiting for a load or new game than there was before.
Even the camp seems to run faster - 30+ fps at very-high graphics in 1080p.
Now if I could just learn how to sword fight effectively!
