Wow, this blew up. I haven’t read everything but the “pledge loyalty” comment was just an example. What about leading a peasant revolt? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engelbrekt_Engelbrektsson lead a peasant revolt and captured/destroyed at least a dozen castles. I personally can’t see why after several years of war the peasants wouldn’t become dissatisfied and war weary and thus revolt. Unless the devs intend to end the war in a few years and have a short time of peace before an expansion for another war.
Since this is realistic game placed to real historical events in real world, there is no paesant revolt and no dozen castles.
Reality is unrealistic, then.

yes. hollywood basically lied and told us it was peasants, it was really more like disgraced nobility using peasants
… or rich people and people of power, yes, definitely, ‘peasant’ was not the greatest word to use. It’s quite logical when you think about it, capable people were leaders. Still, we don’t really have to go far to get an example of a person who rose far above what he used to be without formerly being a part of nobility (part of relatively right family however, yes), and that being Jan Žižka. I don’t know what social standing did blacksmiths have, but I can’t imagine it being particularily bad.
Nonetheless, I would not like to see such an element implemented in the game, for being a power fantasy and being quite far-fetched. However, saying that “we know there is no historic precedence” is quite bold - unless you happen to know the entire known world’s history.
The concept of coming from nothing and rising to the top is very bourgeois/American. As such historically it doesn’t have too much of a place as an emblematic concept to represent in the narrative.
However it’s always appealing and feeds into our expectations of reward in games. I wouldn’t be surprised if act 1 or 2 the player was knighted and maybe at some point in act 3 he must defend a castle. Possibly dying in the process, since why not. They could always pickup the story some his progeny( the spawn of which takes place in some act.)
Žižka wasn’t a noble. He raised to the position of warlord. And that’s it. With a bit of a exaggeration we can say every bandit could became something like that. And that’s not a case we are discussing here.
To me, it’s not whether or not I can become a noble.
It’s whether or not I can PRETEND to be a noble.

I don’t know it might be a little far fetched but being knighted in certainly within the realm of possibility.
Well if it’s anything like Mount and Blade you can do whatever you damn well please. And anybody that has anything to say about it can say hello to your Swadian Knights. That’s just a hope though, it doesn’t look like they’re going quite that far with the freedom. Most likely, the answer is no. But you never know.
That makes me wonder. What happens when we die? Do we just wake up in the last place we slept or saved at?
You haunt your mortal remains until they’re discovered by a random peasant.
Then the nearest town/village will arrange a suitable disposal which you get to attend. During this event it is possible to interact with the environment just enough to waggle a candle, pinch a cat or spoil a pail of milk.
Once decomposition has completed, (anywhere between 1 and 2 years in game time), you will be prompted with an option to resurrect.

Doubt it, this is supposed to be realistic, not like Skyrim or something. It isn’t likely that many children of blacksmiths became Barons during the Middle Ages, no matter what the circumstances.
