So I’m trying to learn lockpicking with Theresa’s uncle, the miller, but I fail every time. Is there a trick for console players to make lockpicking easier? Do you hold your controller differently? Or should we just wait for the patch which is supposed to fix this?
Try to get the sweet-spot as close as you can to thelock (middle), if it´s somewhere on the outside it´s way harder, just leave the lock an reenter as the sweet spot will shift its position everytime.
Some say you should do it in one go steady speed and don´t stop. I personally do it very slowly and stop if i need to rearrange my thumps.
Honestly i found when i started that the “easy” locks are still very hard so if you find the “very easy” lock then you will find them easier as you level up, also if you keep leaving and going back into it then the sweet spot changes and i found the sweet spot being the wall of the right stick easier because it gives you a line
When I practice with the miller, how often can I use the lock for practice? Will I always get xp when I practice on that lock? It would become much easier if you could level up some times before trying real locks.
wait for the patche ,
You can use it 10 times I think, after that it stays open. At level 3 you can activate a perk, letting your picks last twice as long, that´s pretty useful.
I posted the following on some other threads, but thought i’d post it here too in case it is helpful…
I’m playing on PS4 and I struggled with it too, however…
I kept trying and I’ve got my Lock-picking skill up to level 4 or 5. To be honest, it’s now too easy and i unlock every lock first time. i don’t want them to change how it works!
My tips:
1 - put the controller on the floor and grip each thumb-stick with the index finger and thumb. This gives better control and accuracy (and feels like you are holding lock picks)
2 - When you rotate the lock (left-stick), start the rotation by pushing in the direction of the ‘Gold-spot’ first before rotating. This means you roughly rotate both sticks in the same direction at the same time making it easier.
3 - find some “very easy” chests to start with, as I believe this is the recommended type when you have a Lock picking skill level of 0 (or 1)
4 - If you don’t like the position of the “Gold Spot”, cancel lock-picking and start again, the “gold spot” will be in a different location.
5 - Don’t keep reloading a save file if you fail to pick a lock, as you will lose any XP that you have accumulated while trying to pick the lock (as the XP will ultimately increase your skill making picking locks easier).
Hope this helps…
Thanks, it certainly sounds useful. I will try it out today.
I used Trilogys tips about using the thumbsticks with both fingers and thumbs. Worked great for a while. Then you start to get the hang of it and can manage with just the normal approach.
Best advice I can offer is don’t go slowly. If you take each step at snails pace, you start to panic, get all twisted up and it breaks. Just find the sweet spot, put the left thumbstick to the outside and go for it. Nice smooth action at ‘walking pace’. If it breaks, so be it, try again.
After a while you start to earn enough coin to afford lots of lock picks so it gets less stressfull. I’m still only lvl 4 or 5 and can crack a few hard locks now.
The difference seems to be the tolerance in how much off the sweet spot you can be, nothing more.
Thanks, will keep trying. I’m bound to open one eventually…just hate wasting so much hard to earn money on lockpicks that should be cheap to buy. Wish we could craft them ourselves.
