Back when I last played the game (sometime around March) there was a ton of random encounters as you traversed the world. After reinstalling the game and starting a new game under the most recent PS4 patch I have seen a dramatic reduction in all random encounters.
What I have seen:
-Bandit attacks. One or two bandits who jump you from the bushes.
-Bandits put a tree in the road to block your horse.
-One or two Cumans attack.
-Cumans put a loot chest in the road, and attack after you’ve searched it.
Note that these are the only encounters I have seen and they all have happened around either of the Millers outside of Rattay. I have traveled to Skallitz, Talmenberg, Uzhitz, Neuhoff and seen no other events.
What I haven’t seen that I used to see a lot of.
-Unsure Knight. This guy usually waits outside of town. He wears a really nice armor set and reluctantly challenges you to a duel. You can either partake or talk him down. He showed up A LOT, and was a nice sparring partner to try out your sword combos on.
-Mercenary, he showed up quite often too, but not as much as the unsure knight. He too, would challenge you to a duel, and if you won, he’d award you a strong piece of armor.
-Shady merchants. These guys could either be friend or foe. Sometimes they’d sell you a treasure map or loaded die. Other times they’d lure you in and then call for their bandit friends to attack you.
-Murdered body in the road. After approaching the body a person would run up to you and accuse you of murdering or looting corpses. What happened next was determined by your speech skill.
-Random battles. Sometimes it was Guards vs Bandits, sometimes it was Guards vs Cumans, and sometimes it was Bandits vs Cumans. These usually happened in forested areas and provided quite a hefty amount of goods for you to collect and sell.
I don’t know if Warhorse’s intention was for these events to be more rare so the lowered their chances of happening, but the world feels extremely empty without seeing them. I’m hoping there’s some in game trigger I haven’t hit yet, or a level threshold I need to be at to make them occur.
