I’m on PS4 as a console player, and my character has a reading level of 11, but when I tried reading a book that hasn’t been studied by my character, for example The Alchemist’s Dream(which only needs a reading level of 5)it says I didn’t reach the book’s required level, the same as other books like a book that required level 10. I tried loading the game but it doesn’t help. BUG?
It’s not a bug, you need to read the first part before you can read the second part, and the second before the third and so on. So in this case you need to read “The Alchemist’s Dream” first and then part 2 (which you have there).
I’d definitely agree that it’s a bit annoying, but it’s not unrealistic, since sequels often refer to what came before, and if you don’t know what came before you won’t understand what the book means.
Oh god this makes a lot of sense, I didn’t know this mechanism thanks you, but still they can do a lot better than just telling you “You cannot read anymore today” or “You haven’t reached the skill level needed to be able to use this book”. It’s confusing man!
Yeah, I guess they just put a base text to respond to every error (intended errors I mean) instead of using specific ones.
You in this case need Alchemy 5 to read this book. You can read it without the first book, but must wait until you have the level. Later books require higher skill again. I’m not sure how much reading skills has on book use, it does reduce the time to read books.

I’m pretty sure the “level 5” means you need reading 5 as well as alchemy 5.
And the reading skill decreases the amount of jumbled words in texts, but by level 3 or so there’s already barely any left, if any at all.
Not at all as sure if reading is a 1:1. I’m pretty sure I have read some IV skill books, even though I am only middling levels for reading.
You might need reading at half the book level, but I’m not even certain about that.
