?red X on damaged armour?

In patch 1.3 I am seeing red X icons superimposed on top of armour that is badly damaged. I am also seeing this red X on food items that have spoiled. I am trying to understand what the red Xs are supposed to mean/do.

Follow my hopefully not-so-twisted logic, if you will. Spoiled food can still be eaten. Totally destroyed armour can still be worn even though its defensive stats will have been completely degraded by that point, thus providing no protection. So a red X surely does not mean “can’t __”, whether that can’t refers to eating or wearing.

So if it doesn’t mean “can’t”, does it mean “shouldn’t”? Sure, it’s is dangerous to eat spoiled food and it is dangerous to walk into battle with defunct armour, but does that really warrant a flashy warning icon? I doubt it.

So if it doesn’t mean “can’t” and it serves negligible purpose as “shouldn’t”, then just what does the red X mean?

Does it mean I am no longer, in patch 1.3, be able to sell spoiled food to vendors? Checked that. I still can.
Does it mean I am no longer able to have severely damaged armour be repaired by smiths? Checked that. Still can.

…Here’s what I think the red X means. I think it doesn’t mean anything at all. It seems to be nothing more than an attention grabber, like a caution sign. But is this necessary? The Condition percentage number next to an item is already indicative of the usefulness of that item (ie. its danger level) and these Condition numbers also become coloured to match the varying degree of danger.

So why did patch 1.3 add these red Xs? Was there a memo I didn’t get?

They are ugly, distracting, unpleasant, and redundant. It is much easier for me to recognize an item by its icon than by its name, but I can’t see those icons clearly anymore now that a bunch of them in my inventory are obscured by red Xs.

Warhorse, can we please get these things removed? Pretty please? Pretty, pretty please with a red X not on top?!
Thank you.

Are you talking about when you look in inventory? Thats because its broken. Need repaired

Agreed. The red X is dumb.

But not as dumb as all the gamebreaking bugs…

Which makes me wonder why they added the X when they could have been working on more important things.

because it was really easy to do and calls attention to actually fixing equipment?

Probably…
