Scanned assets from museums (Prague Castle?)

I’m aware that more work at this stage of development might ring all sorts of alarm bells, but it occurred to me that you could generate in-game assets from scanned period arms and armour – either as part of a new backer tier or as DLC later in the release cycle.
Laser scanning might prove tricky in terms of revolving the larger assets, such as whole suits of armour, but I think photogrammetry would work well enough to grab the major parts, with the remainder being modelled in the desktop.
Shields, swords and smaller handheld weapons could be hand-scanned or set up on a turntable, but again, the shields could be capped using photogrammetry, which requires a lot less equipment/fuss and provides very good results.
The fabulous bird-headed armour (which may or may not be of a suitable period) in Prague castle sprang to mind. . .

Sounds like a cool idea but I think it might take to much time.

for armor usually not, for complex items with many folds, like clothing, taberds, usually have to be worn by a person so that’s out of question as well.

what they can do is buy reproductions.

but to be honest, i’ve looked a the early screenshots where they had a lot of different armors and they looked really good, very life-like, basically the best medieval armor depiction in any game.

they just need to tune accuracy, detail, and it should be fine. i think for some armor like the gambeson, they already do photogrammatery.

So I checked and asked in the studio. The idea is good BUT! Jabba our MoCap pro said that it’s nearly impossible to scan shiny things. It would also be way to expensive. But Joanna our Historian as well as the Art and graphic team of course visited several museums to see, touch, feel and make pictures of different armor. But our animation team will create them all by hand! :slight_smile:

The exhibition of long knives and swords at the end of this hall is really great. It is made in a really fucked up way that makes it easy to overlook how interesting it actually is, but when you take time and read the descriptions, you can enjoy comparing a 6.000 years old Egyptian sword with 2000 y/o Roman short sword, 10th century Viking sword, all the way to the 17th century Czech swords.

Sometimes reality is weirder than we could imagine.

Will there be imperfections in the armour? Such and forging dents and slightly irregular lines, to make it more realistic instead of everything perfectly distanced and a straight line etc etc?

I have to agree with Dushin, they are very bad replications. It’s not their style but actual research into the armour styles themselves, certain pieces belong to different harnesses, bad steel, bad binding, rivets in the wrong places, and breath holes large enough to fit an arrow through! Not to mention the eye slits are unbelievably large and have no rounded edges on the helmet on the far right. Knowing alot really dulls down the amazement of armour when it’s not right sadly. :frowning:

Hi Tobi - yes, the shiny problem. I imagine the curators wouldn’t be too happy if you asked to paint them in matt black for an afternoon. . . very much looking forward to seeing the in-game armour. I guess I’ll have to wait for my (slightly too late) “Gilded Greenwich harness of King Henry VIII”

Maybe I am wrong, but this armor can only be used with a horse. Without horse, there is a real weak point in the middle…of his juwels???

That was the pre-historian in me talking.
As for “by then full armors were more of a formality anyway” the true decline of plate armour use took place in the 17th cent.

This allways makes me thinking why fantasy game designers keep trying to came with all the crazy stuff like mega huge shoulderpads with diamonds casting lighting… when this armour is just pure beauty.

their parents should have taken them to the museum and open their eyes somewhat to the beauty of things that exist already. i bet that’s why they get involved in fantasy type stuff in the first place.

I for one demand a vote on whether Kingdom Come: Deliverance should have an armoured harness codpiece as shown in this image. I vote yes.
