So they call it photogrammetry

Hi there! I’ve been browsing through websites about videogames recently just as usual. And suddenly ended up reading this interesting blog about technology called photogrammetry, which allowed The Astronauts to create such realistic picture in “The Vanishing of Ethan Carter” with just Unreal 3 Engine. And for now this is off-topic of course, but imagine, how authentic Act II and III of KCD would be, if the swords, the furniture, the dungeon walls and all the rest were all taken from reality entirely and directly! Man…

UPD: It’s no sensation of course, so I’m not sure if Warhorse are not using it already. But I can’t remember them telling abou it. Maybe someone can tell?

Photogrammetry really is a nice thing - but the amount of data produced is unbelievably high and the hourwork included is extraordinary.
I think simply modelling swords and furniture would be much easier.

well, not really. most models have to be made in high detail anyway. with photogrammetry, the artist now essentially has a high-polygon model pre-made for him. he just has to clean it and then retopologize it into a low poly model. things he would have to do anyway. it’s actually quicker. and for things like clothing, much faster, because it takes a skilled modeler a pretty long time to make convincing folds on a piece of clothing, but it’s faster with 3d scanning

Isn’t the biggest problem of 3D scanning, that you need access to every real world item you want have in game? No only that, it should be in the condition of a few hundred years before if you want to use it “as is” and not spending an awful amount of extra time in terms of remodeling and retexturing.
For some select items it might be worth it but as the one and only method I seriously doubt it.

Ah, okay. I’m not so informed on the part of programming as I am in the part of photogrammetry.
I’ve modelled a room once with a 3D Laserscan, the amount of time needed is overwhelming.

Agreed. The scale of the game is huge, much more than TVOEC. Too big to use it everywhere. I’d like to see some statues, paintings, ceramics and chests scanned though. I’ve seen the Video Update #8, it seems they 3D scan faces only… man, this facial animation is brilliant! I’m so impressed

i would like to know more about the “homemade” 3d scanning device mentioned in video update 8. is there any information available about the setup the kindom come crew uses?

I didn’t understand if they use photogrammetry or a “homemade 3d scanner”, they scanned actors, i know big companies use handheld 3d scanners for it. Like Beyond to souls for example. Amazing graphic I should say.
