Stretch Goal idea. Armor customization

Hello, I have an idea for a stretch goal that is attractive and I don’t think it would be too difficult. I think it would be great if you could customize your armor in these ways:

  1. Choose between satin polish, mirror polish, blued, or “black from the hammer” for your armor’s finish.
  2. Have optional brass or etched brass strips on the edges of the plates.
  3. Customizable plumes for your helm.
  4. Customizable tabards, maybe even have a folder in the game files where you can add your own pictures to put on your tabard, like what Fable:The Lost Chapter did with player tattoos.

These sound reasonable to me anyways, but I don’t really know what all would go into doing things like this.

The idea of being able to customise every detail of a character from physical features to clothing/armor has always appealed to me. I like the idea.

I think that would be one of the best things available to do as a stretch goal considering the character is supposed to be a blacksmith it seems a very fitting and proper idea that you be able to add your own player uniqueness to your armor considering that every suit of plate and mail ever donned by one or another when made fresh was that completely unique having it’s own special history whether it’s a fold that just would quite go in a helmet or the size itself if some of the pieces could speak to say ahh the history they could tell us. The only problem with something like that when it comes to customization is where do you stop it that’s the only thing I could see as being a problem here because as part of that different materials put into the smelting process of the armors basic shape contributes to final coloration due to how it cools at what temperature during tempering and things like that and since it’s realistic that would be a player process to do so it could end up being a very difficult mechanic to pull of but then again I’m probably going into the detail extremes of it as well.

This would take a lot of coding and re-texturing to get this done. The tabard part and the tabard picture upload idea could be implemented in a few hours but definitely is a customer grabber. Would deffinitely back the tabard part but the different armor finishes would take kind of long. Thinking about it, they would have to find HD pictures of these finishes, artists would have to make the design, Texture artists and modelers after they are done with all the armor (still early alpha, all the armor is not complete) they will have to go to each armor individually code the requirements needed to acquire the certain finish, than implement them in the game, also they would need to code the blacksmiths ingredients required to forge the certain armor. IDK much about game developing, correct me if i am wrong but i can assume that it could take more than a week to get all that done. Maybe 2 weeks.

That is not what I had in mind. The retexturing part would be easy: satin and mirror finishes would be exactly the same but mirror would have a whiter specular map and maybe a darker texture to make the highlights pop; blued steel has the same texture as normal steel, but is blue; black from the hammer would be the only one that would require much work, it would look like it is caked in soot. Who said anything about ingredients? Just make it where you pay money and it trades your satin finish bascinet for a blued bascinet. Actual armourers would have specialist to do the polishing, it is not like the entire harness was done by one guy, it would make no sense for you to do it, you would just pay someone.

you are a blacksmith’s son… what do you mean it would make no sense. that makes no sense.

Armorers were a very specific type of blacksmith, who specialized in making armor, your father wouldve only have made simple kettle helms and whatnot as far as armor goes. Furthermore, like I already said, the finish on armor was done by a specialist, your father wouldn’t have done that. It goes even further, one suit of armor would be made by a number of armorers, who specialized in making very specific pieces of the harness, and all the leather straps? Also done by a specialist. The maille gussets? Yet another specialist. This isn’t Skyrim, a full, complete harness takes an entire workshop, not one guy who was just an apprentice one week ago. If one novice could make a complete harness in a day like in videogames , they wouldn’t have been so expensive.

you sound like an expert on what is possible and doable in the game, as well as what customers want. please make a topic with your own ideas, i need to be entertained.

imagine if one could create their own armor in game with customization like hammering a pattern on (nothing major just a cross and maybe the design on the french flag.) or even make nonsensical armors like stuff in dragon age, or go crazier and just hammer the shape to mimic modern architecture.

making leggings shaped like this would admittedly be impracticable but entertaining.

imagining it right now, seems kinda stupid. everyone wearing realistic armor. realistic atmosphere, mature story, then in walks henry with the nipple armor, huge spikey pauldron, leg armor that looks like some building in bahrain.

leave the dragon age stuff in dragon age.

Isen’t there already plenty of costumization implomented? I mean should they spend more work on costumization than what there already planning?

alright than make it yourself when the modding editor comes out. Warhorse is in a bind as it is. Personally i would love to support this, who wouldn’t? but i am playing the devils advocate, this is simply another thing that developers would have to do which could take forever.

Dear god, you again? The team have stated that they are open to suggestions, and this entire forum is tired of your crap. I swear, most of this forum probably groans every time they see a post with your name on it, so stop trying to snuff out creativity and go away you shitposter.

i like to spend time dabbling in coding and 3d modeling when i have free time, so i am not an expert, but i at least have experience and it takes forever to achieve anything. Also i am pretty sure everyone will agree that the Tabard and Tabard personalization is a sweet idea, i mean i dont believe anyone would disagree with a harmless, easy to implement, extra. But again, i am not going to make a topic with my own ideas because i dont want the developers getting more grief from their customers about what should and shouldnt be added into the game.

If you were a developer making a video game, i am pretty damn sure you wouldnt want hundreds of people from 10 to 30 years old telling you what you need to do. This forum is to help them, and we can all agree it takes more time weeding through all the posts that people make telling the developers want to do, to find the few backers who backed the game because they want to see the game made and are trying their best to help them in any way they can. Not backers who backed the game because it is a medieval open-world rpg and they have been saving “cool” “revolutionary” “witty” ideas to add to the game. The game they have spent months(or over a year) already planning and developing. This is the equivalent of someone writing an essay and halfway through the person who is suppose to check grammar and spelling errors just decides to use this opportunity to write notes all over the essay telling them how they should write their essay. Yea, some ideas would help the writer. But he did not ask you, and if he did ask you, you can find it from their posts which clearly states what they want help with, because they are also unsure themselves.

If you haven’t seen their last video submission, they clearly stated they are currently DONE with stretch goals. Because they have hit a roadblock. if you want your creativity heard, you can always post on the modding category. Because you can make the mod yourself, or other people can make the mod for you. I am not a “shitposter” i also did not decide that anyone’s idea was not good enough. I just want you to think about other people( the devs) when you post things. I clearly stated that i love some of your ideas, i do not understand why you had to write this. Its very rude.

Well in case you haven’t watched their last video submission, they clearly stated that they are giving stretch goals a rest UNLESS they think of, or are made aware of, something reasonable and attractive, which is what I was trying to do. Having stretch goals is important, if there are none no one new will pledge. Myself, and the others who post suggestions, are trying to help, if the devs don’t want to hear it all they have to do is simply not read threads titled “Stretch goal idea”.

But you? What do you do? All you do is go around, thread to thread, shooting people down, stomping out creativty acting like proposing suggestions is some horrid offence against human art. And the cherry on top? When someone gets tired of your horsecrap and gives you a piece of their mind, you act like it is unwarranted. Well it is warrented, because you have made it your JOB to go to anyone with an idea and tell them “go do it yourself” and all kinds of negative horsecrap, and not only that, in your thread “Hey little boys and girls. Stop telling the developers what to do!” you have outright INSULTED us! Who the fresh hell do you think you are? Don’t you DARE act like you haven’t written the things you have! Trust me, considering the crap you’ve been pulling, I’ve been rather polite with my words.

yes. you have been very polite and completely level headed. totally. and i see your self justification at the end completely removes all fallacy. yup.

and if you are going to have the brazen claim that all i do is going around “shooting” people down than at least be able to cite more than one. Yea i did say “go do it yourself”, and i know which post i did it in, i also take responsibility to my forum post as well. but that is one. ONE not ALL, i don’t “stomp” creativity, i simply question it. which you seem to find ridiculous. and what do you mean stretch goals=more pledges? really? name one company that is making a game like this. It is different and new from the start. there will be plenty of backers. I post all of my ideas in the modding category because i would rather have someone make a mod for the game after the game is complete. sorry for thinking about other people. MY BAD. You are so angry, and you are so biased that your argument can’t really be taken as legitimate. I have been completely respectful to you and i have agreed with some of your ideas. But i guess no matter how many times i reiterate that, you will continue to be angry with me. if you want to cool down, i will totally be okay with discussing this further. But philosophy and finding a solution to a philosophical debate cannot be achieved if one party/individual is letting emotions get in the way. Because as you can clearly see, they will make up/load words to lean arguments too one side. While i am simply trying to debate with you 1on1, you are repeatedly writing your posts as if you have the world on your side, and are writing your posts in the efforts that if someone stumbled across this thread and found your post, would immediately suggest with the information presented to them, that i am someone who does the things you stated. which i do not.

oh btw, don’t get on your high and mighty horse saying i am in the wrong for telling him to mod it himself because you and me both know what you posted earlier before me. So…

because before i posted saying mod it yourself (also i at least had the decency to respect his post) you stated that his post is not good because it does not fit with your image of realism. Way to “shoot” down his creativity.hypocrite.

Just so everyone who stumbles across my post can see your hypocrisy(same tactic you like to use)

“No compass or map at all is not realistic, that is adding artificial difficulty and nonsensically calling it realistic. Realistic is making compasses and maps expensive, and making your character create a crude map himself if you cannot afford a detailed map made by monks, even though Europe had printing presses in 1300, I cannot find any maps printed from before the 1470’s. Warhorse would also have to make sure the sun rises and sets correctly, correctly place the North Star, and inform the player of that so they can get direction from that. It would be pretty rad if in order to view the map or compass your character would have to pull them out where you can see the items in his hands in first person.”

posted 3 days ago in response to Cannibudds post titled “Game Difficulty settings alternative”

First off, I didn’t tell Cannibudds his idea was “not good” or anything like that. I said that having no map or compass in the game at all is unrealistic, because they existed at the time, and I went on to say that maps and compasses should instead be expensive, but I still agreed that they shouldn’t be common. I did not shoot his idea down, I added my revision to it; shooting it down is telling him to do it himself, which implies it is not worth anyone’s time, which is what you did, and your “apology” was about as non-apologetic as they come. Way to take one comment from a conversation and then lie about it. And I was right, no maps or compasses would be historically inaccurate, that is not my “image of realism,” that is history, that is fact.

I love how you are acting like you are not stomping out creativity, but rather “questioning it”, when your “Hey little boys and girls. Stop telling the developers what to do!” outright said that we are all “childish” for making any suggestions whatsoever.

That is what the Modding category is for. hopefully you will realize when your 13 year old mind breaks after 2 minutes of strenuous concentration trying to add a pre-scripted, pre-animated, pre-modeled, object into to your “super sick mod”.

Yeah, that is not respectful “questioning”. In that post pretty you much outright said that not only are we pricks for making suggestions, but also that we are all stupid.

I am not writing these replies in hopes that someone will come and take my side. I am telling you that I will not tolerate you and what you are doing here.

Lastly, how on God’s green earth is this a philosophical debate? I’m telling you that you’re being a jackass, not comparing and contrasting Dostoevsky and Nietzsche.

Aah, back to the topic…
I imagine Henry as a smith of a village: All in his life, he probably made and repaired agricultural tools, cart parts, horseshoes, nails, langes messers, maybe some arrowheads for the town’s garrison and for the lord’s hunts, maybe some kettle helmets for the market fair. I’m sure he would be able to craft from handgonnes to crude armor pieces many things simply because of his proficiency with the material, but I don’t think that the freeform customization that fib118 proposes, makes too much sense.
Almost all the truly beautiful pieces in museums are made by rich armour maker dynasties with long history and spectacular clientele, with a manufacture employing several masters and delivering all around Europe. Henry might not even know the exact process to make such a truly exquisite armor, like a simple mason couldn’t build the Taj Mahal himself (I know, it’s a bit idiotic example, but all example is), but he also doesn’t really have the time and money to do so. So even if he constructs an armor, it will be practical and traditional (this does not mean he won’t be aware of the trends and fashion!), decorated just as much as his buyer can afford - which is potentially not that much. Also, let’s face it, if someone could afford such an armor - then he wouldn’t order it from Henry. And here we are talking about simply more elaborate pieces, not something clouded like that architecture-whatnot.
There is absolutely no reason for him to build spiked shoulder pads or i’dunno. It would cost him money, time, material to make not only something that no one will pay for, but not even optimal to use.

Though I’m not against some form of sensible customization with smithing, like deciding what kind of visor to put on a helmet, or to not put one at all, or deciding whether or not to put a skirt on breast plate, or to make the left hand gauntlet a simpler, “mittens”-construction for lighter price tag, or something like that.
