Suggested balance changes

Changes I’d make to the combat system if I were a person who wrote mods:

  1. Higher skill should buy you more bullet time rather than just letting you power through everything. Some of us are older and don’t have super-quick reflexes.

  2. When wielding a bow at close range, enemy AI should just repeatedly stab at you like a human cuisinart, why are they waiting to strike, it’s not like they can parry a damn arrow? Right now high-skilled archery trivializes combat because you can reliably face-arrow as many enemies as you can carry arrows.

  3. Rebalance stats so they give diminishing returns in combat from 10-20 with new 20 being about equal performance-wise to current 15. Maybe keep the current strength carry weight, and Speech is probably fine, but in terms of damage/speed/etc the combat stats get kinda super-human and the game is more fun with a more grounded, realistic Henry.

  4. I need a way to macro combos, I have apparently never executed a single combo going by my game stats and that’s with 165 hours so far on Steam. (Alternativey, maybe put in some wooden training dummies so I can practice combos against enemies who won’t block them and who don’t die from the first hit before I can execute said combo). It seems like every enemy either dies in one hit, or blocks every blow, so combos become redundant.

  5. Given how powerful it is, poison should wash off your weapon in a matter of minutes not a matter of days. Make it a special use thing not a walking constant standard thing.

  6. Either add the bow reticle in or adjust henry’s arm position so that “natural” sighting is more possible, because it’s really awkward without console commanding in the reticle, but tune down bow damage a bit because, damn. Basically archery needs to be easier to use but less radically effective. The above-mentioned AI change – making enemies stab archers repeatedly rather than defensively stand back like if you’re wielding a melee weapon – might be enough, without a change to damage on successful shots.

  1. Renorm and rebalance some of the higher end gear – “better piercing” arrows, the Stinger shortsword, a few other pieces that are disproportionately more powerful than anything else.

Right now there’s virtually no problem in the game that can’t be solved by a high-stat henry with a good bow and poisoned “better piercing” arrows. I slaughtered the whole damn Nest of Vipers singlehanded by just standing at the top of a one-man-wide staircase and feeding everyone who came up the stair bane-poisoned eye arrows. I guess there were other solutions (wear cuman armor? Sneak in?) but . . why?

Overall take – make the actual gameplay ( timing blocks and parries; aiming arrows) a bit easier for those of us who aren’t 20 years old with perfect reflexes, but tune down the superiority that accrues as Henry gets endgame gear and stats.

remove the green shield and rely on visual cues to get blocks and ripostes. Also remove the directional attack thing…idk about mouse and keyboards but on console you dont really have any problem using it, or i dont anyway, so getting rid of it I should be able to tell based on how my hands/weapon are which direction I am holding…or just keep moving around and always be conscious that way of which way you are aiming.

Or make it an option to have on or off depending on how you want to play. Or have an option to choose difficulty. Easy gives you cross hairs for ranged combat and the enemy is nerfed. medium enemy is harder but still have the assist for combat, hard with no assist and full strength enemy or something like that.

Yeah, it’s kinda weird that the game doesn’t have difficulty settings at all.

I’m kinda being weird though because I want the game to be harder in some ways and easier in others. Like, if weapon skill gave me more bullet time, but everyone had twice as much health, or armor was twice as effective, at least I’d be able to execute a combo sometimes without killing the hostile on the first strike anyway.

I feel like the game has great underlying systems that I can’t access because I don’t have the reflexes of a fifteen year old and/or other gameplay systems trivialize them (example: why bother with stealth when archery exists; why bother trying combos when you can 1-hit-kill most enemies and a repeated stab at the face is superior to any combo).

It is kind of crappy you hardly ever get to see your full combo but the whole point of a fluid combo is not necessarily to land all the strikes, unless it takes that many, but to continue fluidly if you were to get blocked.

That being said, it would be nice to see waaaay more enemies on patrol/in general and also to have stronger enemies. Tired of raiding “bandit camps” with like, 3-4 people in it. Make those camps like a quarter the size of Pribaslaviz, like 10-15 bandits; even if it doesnt start happening until you reach a certain level or a certain main quest it triggers more enemies to spawn in places where you used to only find a few.

And for the love of all things holy make the mercenary on the road worth my time to fight. The gold isnt worth it any more than any other gold, as its so easy to come by anyway, and the guy is no better then any other NPC you can fight; he’s a hired guard, he should be a badass

That should be, now am killing the wayfarer knights with just one perfect block which is not fun.

they were always easy, though given his character I think that is the point…easy armor if you’re willing to beat him/talk him out of the duel and then knock him out. He was my first set of decent armor, arms and chest anyway. Course I ran into him pretty early.

Yeah but still, they should be harder to defeat with time. Am just afraid that I will be caught doing it. The cumans have the best armor at least to finance buying new armor. I depleted rattai armourer dry he has 200 coins now in wealth.

yeah the archery reminds me of oblivion to the letter, backpedal and let em fly and nobody can stop you. that’s a little embarrassing considering oblivion came out over 10 years ago.
