Just got this and trying to get better in combat. Right now biggest challenge (other than Q key can’t be pressed when moving left.) is trying to find openings with enemies using shields. Does anyone have good techniques or tips on how to survive?

Feints, correct use of measure and timing (e.g. allow him to strike from out of measure, and close and strike out of tempo).
Usually you have a distinct reach advantage so can attack with some safety against shield armed solos. Stay at measure and attack the openings, or create one with a feint. He has to do much more to get inside arming sword or axe distance. Thrusts have the longest reach, by a small amount, but can be deflected/forced to miss more easily than the other attacks - this is not a real problem when attacking nachtreisen (attacking behind his attack) as he is committed to his attack and cannot simultaneously defeat yours. Voiding is necessary for nachtreisen to work as you also cannot simultaneously block and attack along the line of his attack.
An alternative if you can work the timings is a parry-riposte. But the intent to stay inside his measure, with a ‘finesse’ counter is inherently risky if you mess up the timing. It is very effective when it works, but being outside his reach, or hitting him on your terms is inherently safer than playing timing games (especially given the lower than ideal frame rates of the Beta).
Archery is definitely the easiest option, but it is far more satisfying to use the sword once you figure out what works.
I guess the best method is to show a video…AI vs you. Advanced. They have a shield…your choice on your setup.
