First of all, this is not a suggestion but only a question.
I saw the long video of the Witcher and I was a bit chocked to see how fast he was able to move in the swamp.
Normally swamps are muddy and you must move slowly and carefully on this kind of terrain. I understand that this can be a choice from the devs to preserve Fun and dynamism, but in my opinion, be able to run on all kinds of terrains like we are on a path removes the credibility of the world. I will not feel that the world is dangerous, that we are in the middle age, time when nature were not domesticated. I love to play medieval game to feel the wilderness and the danger of trekking around at those time, it is few possible in Europe today.
So my question is, will the terrain will have some influence on the player movement? will the weather too? can we die by falling from a cliff or in a pothole.
If yes, I will be very curious about the mechanisms used.
I want something along the lines of - yes you move slower uphill etc, but not the the level of say DayZ, where the smallest incline reduces you to snails pace.
I agree with you on one level but on the other hand Geralt is no mere mortal, heās a sterile 60+ guy who kills monsters for a living, had his genetics thoroughly jumbled and probably put his weenie into more women than we meet in a lifetime.
Yes, the gameplay balance should dictate the pace,
But in my previous post I had a dream that they implemented a mini-game to get out when you are stack in the mud or in the quicksand. What I saw from the video update from yesterday, Dan loves mini-games. And I loves them too, when them are well implemented. Along with this, a hunter or ranger capabilities for a better terrain reading in order to avoid to be to much stack. And if you donāt have this skill, just avoid dangerous terrain or hire a guide.
But I know I am dreamingā¦
And there is also horses, if you want travel faster
thankfully dayz is that way because the engine is terrible and their design isnāt realism or immersion centric, just social gaming with guns, zombies, survival.
so i think we can expect better handling of terrain in kcd
So long as they donāt make it as bad as Mount and Blade. Also, the wilderness isnāt very dangerous, people who think the wilderness is dangerous are people who have never spent much time in the wilderness.
Yes may be in our time, but I think in the middle age (14 and 15 century) they were some places unknown and dangerous. Europe was covered with forest and swamps, they were much less path and the nights were darker because the cities were not illuminated as today. Also the equipment and tools were different.
But even today if you are injured alone in the wilderness you are in trouble.
Now the question is how the Kingdom Deliverance world will be. Will it be a full civilized world? with crops and small forests. In this case I fully agree with you.
Or will it contains also some wild dangerous part to go with treacherous quicksand and pothole?
I also watched some Survivor TV series, he shows than one week alone in the wilderness with few equipment is quite a challenge.
And I think people that think that wilderness is not dangerous and go unprepared are in trouble.
Well yes surely the wilderness is a dangerous place.
But dont forget, that the world is not realistic from the distances. In Real Life it could happen that you walk 2 days on a path until you find a village or something similuar. But in that game its maybe a march for 10 minutes - I guess. So the possibility to rest at night in the woods is very small.
As we could see they implement animals too in that game. We saw already a bear and maybe they add more like a wolves etcā¦
If you have to rest in the woods there should be something like events there a bear or something could attack you or something in that way. They could lower the possibility by making a fire as a mini game or to build up something like a shelterā¦
Fully agree with you, if the story takes places in real area like 10km2 and inhabited then of course and unfortunately for me the dangers will be less.
My main concern was also more related how the character will move on different terrain.
Dude, I live in the country, there are no cities to light up the sky, and no trails. I live in Florida, where there is nothing but forest and swamp. I lived my childhood playing in the woods, just a small child in the woods, and had no problem. In KCD you will be better equipped than Les Stroud, you will have weapons and supplies, Les Stroud has the equipment that an average person might carry day-to-day. Quicksand is also an non-issue, if you grew up in that environment and know what you are doing, you are always watching your step anyways.
I go on overnight spear hunts all the time, and there is nothing for me to fear, anything less than a bear or 3+ wolves is nothing to worry about, and if you you know how to use that spear you can take on the bear too.
Point is, I have lived in this allegedly āaustereā environment all my life, and so I donāt have a problem with it, Henry will have the same experience as me because he has also lived in the country with woodland, so wouldnāt have any problem with the wilderness either.
generally speaking, bears and wolves avoid humans. they were usually more of an issue because they killed livestock. if you know what your doing, being in the wilderness is probably just as safe as being in an urban area, if not moreso. furthermore, the most likely thing to kill you in the wilderness is exposure, and if you have towns relatively close by, that shouldnt really be an issue. the other danger i can think of in this time period would be bandits
Yes i see your point, and understand that if you are use to wilderness, things are of course more easy. But i guess still you have ro care no? And yes I was speaking of Les Stroud.
By way, as this is a RPG, we can decide that our character will be a total zero in the wilderness. May be there will be some abilities and skills as well for this aspect.
But if ichoose to be a city thief, it will be more immersive to feel inconfortable in the nature.
The guy lived in a village, with no internet or computers, not even books. Trust me, the guy will have spent quite some time in the woods.
This lead to another question
Will the game will be rigid with our character background, like grand thief auto for exemple or we will have full freedom to imagine his story life, like Elder Scrolls.
Then imagine that he was rised in a city, where he becomes a thief⦠After some time he decided to return to his home village to help his father.
I mean the backround is important for the immersion and the story consistency when it come to the character class.
i seem to recall that they seem pretty dedicated to the backround being more or less just a blacksmithās son, its after everything that he knew was destroyed that you get the freedom to guide where he goes
I wouldnāt mind seeing a little bit of blood on my sword.
I walk regularly with GPS, and unless the slope goes above 20% my walking pace is uniform at around 6.5km/h (4+mi/h) - it increases a bit for slopes downwards at up to around 5% on rough ground or 10% on paved. (around 8.5 km/h max, before tapering off again at steeper slopes.)
On very steep uphill slopes effort is limited by cardio strength and reduces linearly with slope. My average on a 40% slope nearby is nearly exactly 3.2km/h
This speed is very similar on unmade foot paths (just pasture/grazing, or on a variety of mediaeval green lanes, and other irregular surfaces) and on modern paved roads, being limited by stride length and a comfortable cadence.
The difference in effort is around 45% to 315% of the smooth level ground effort level.
I have thousands of km of walking recorded which confirm this pace under a variety of conditions of weather, ground condition (though with lower limits of slope (up & down) before pace drops in very muddy conditions on clay, there isnāt much variation for anything else), and lighting condition (from daylight sunny, rain, snow, and rain under overcast at night).
This is real world measured pace, from a rather small man in his 40s. Iād consider it perfectly possible for a healthy adult from this period.
Thanks for those informations,
yes on a good path I agree.
But my post was more related to out of path walking, like moving into swamp, chaotic terrain and through heavy vegetation.
I would like if it is possible to feel the difference in and out of path. Like in the real life.
I like hiking too, I feel much less comfortable in some terrain when I am out of path.
Iāve not noticed any significant variation except on slopes with slippery clays underfoot.
As noted this includes across rough pasture, which is essentially ācross countryā in open ground, or very deep swamp, but it does include soft ground on flat terrain, tackled with a walking staff. Iād note that this isnāt āshort distanceā paces either, but rather sustained average (and point to point actuals) over āup toā 9 hours at a time, and usually over 2-4 hours. (Seldom less).
It does admittedly omit dense and tall vegetation (largely because there are seldom PROW going through this type of terrain without well defined paths).
I do walk abnormally fast according to most published estimates, and by comparison to other people, but this isnāt by virtue of long leg length 5ā5" height, 55kg.
