From gramatic point of veiw names North America and South America implies that there is also the America. It only makes sense that the America consists of both Americas.
Therfore one may quite logically conclude that those “butt hurt” South Ameicans are right.
“God bless America” now makes little sense in the way you U.S. citizens use it, hah.
But even this being truth, commonly the word “American” is used for describing U.S. citizens.
In that kind of sense South Americans are really nitpicking because they are just playing with words.

If I remember corretly I was taught that America is one “supercontinent” consisting of two continents S and N America.
But that was not the point, I was not disputing that they are two different continents, neither was I implying that they are one continent, or at least that was not my intention.
My point was that you do not own monopoly on calling yourself Americans.

We were the first independent nation to exist on either continents. We were the first to use the word America in our name. We are the largest and most powerful nation on either continents. Yeah i’d say we do have a monopoly on calling ourselves Americans.
