I am not really sure, but in the end it comes to the question: what could have happened to the kids inside if they didn’t shoot the intruder? Apparently any of million of bad things.

That is what movies make you think. In ideal world, yes. In really world, very often the only meaningful way of defensive gun use is shooting at the center of mass.

Anyways, you never shoot to kill, you shoot to stop the threat.
