The Save System

So, I’ve been playing this game since launch. I was aware that WH was planning on doing something different with the save system in this game to incentivize players to think carefully of their choices and options which playing the game.
While I understand where WH is coming from, I think (like many of you) that this save system isn’t the way to achieve this goal.
Here’s why it doesn’t work:

  1. They introduced a mechanic with the Savior’s Schnapps that allows you to quick save. This mechanic actually defeats the primary goal WH was trying to achieve. While the Savior’s Schnapps can be quite pricey, it’s quite easy to make. When I was just dicking around at the monastery, I ended up cooking 20 of them. That’s 20 times I could save at any point in the game.
  2. When the game autosaves, it doesn’t overwrite the previous autosave. This not only clutters the limited save inventory, it allows you to load a previous save and change any choices you aren’t satisfied with. Again this breaks the goal that WH was trying to achieve.
  3. For some reason, this save system either crashes the client, or corrupts all of your saves in a playline, causing you to lose tens of hours of gameplay.

I think that if WH wants us to play the game straight through and be stuck with story decisions we make in a playthrough, they should implement a system like FromSoft does in their souls games. Every gameplay action and decision you make is saved. There are no loads from a list of previous saves.
As it currently is, the save system will continue to be a problem, and what they have doesn’t make much sense.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m loving the game so far, and I’m taking my time with it. But this game is far from a masterpiece.

Okay, okay. But my question is this: Why force us at all?

1.) Thanks to modding, if people don’t want to use your system, they won’t so ultimately, you’re only punishing people on the console and that seems unfair.

2.) If it is important for you to stick with the consequences of your choices (which to me is strange given there really aren’t that many “consequences” in this game) , learn to have some self control and don’t use any feature to change decisions.

A side story to the above, I love Assassin’s Creed Black Flag. Love it. It’s one of the few games that I’ve played unmodded more than once (and that’s something I don’t do with most games I like) but the way I play is that I don’t repair out at sea and I always have an active wanted level. And though I wouldn’t have minded the option to be there, I wouldn’t tell/want them to change their game so it is like that for everyone. People can just have self control. You don’t like fast travel? Don’t use it, but there’s no need to remove fast travel from a game.

3.) I feel as though in a game that has actual consequences, being able to save how and when you want is even more important. Maybe I don’t feel like I should have to start an entire new game to see how things would go if I chose option C instead of option A at a point that occurs mid way through the game.

Bottom line, people should be able to play a game that they purchased in a way that is enjoyable to them. The exception being in the case of MMOs. But single player games (or even those where you can play with a friend or two) are games where how you play your game has no affect on mine so why force us one way or another when it comes to certain features?

With the current state of play that would seriously fuck a lot of people off.

Some shit is broken in main quests others just systems not working correctly. it is just about tolerable having to go back a save or some cases two in order to correct shit.

I agree. I was just pointing out that if they wanted to go with a system where your choices meant something, they could take a page out of the Souls series

I first wanted to write something like “oh boi not another whining-about-the-savesystem-thread” but this nailed it absolutely (imo)!

I think I get what you’re saying. It’s like, since they are trying to force our decisions to stand (though in my opinion, whether a decision matters or not has more to do with the affect it has on the outcome) then this would be the only feasible way to do it.

In that case I agree, but I also agree with @Sterling-Archer that it would upset a lot of people to do things that way (mind you, in addition to various other factors/reasons) given the state of the game.
