Things not to do in game that seem to cause crashes with patch 1.4.1 (spoilers)

I just wanted to describe how a couple of “abnormal” situations did break the game for me: at one point in the game, before 1.4.1 patch and before the quest in which you have to become a monk (during Pestilence), I managed to enter the monastery through a door that was just opened by a monk. I moved quickly and stole some books and torn pages there (I did not even know what these torn pages were). I must add that I also shamelessly killed some unfortunate witnesses in the process of fleeing the place. Finally, I escaped the monastery through a door in the courtyard. After this non-sensical psychotic behavior, a “reputation in monastery” line appeared on my character screen: as expected, it was set to -100. I did not find a way to recover this reputation (no complaint here as this clearly was not the way to behave), probably because I never went to jail for my crimes. After that, with patch 1.3.x applied, I could enter the monastery whenever I wished through my exit door (it was left wide open by the owners: monks just ignored me or fled whenever I entered the premises). Continuing with this save game, when the main quest in monastery began, it was broken for me since no one would talk to me inside, except for the scripted introduction. With patch 1.4.1, using a saved game in which these events had happened simply make the game crash whenever I enter the main gate of monastery.

Another situation that did make the game crash for me was when I fast travelled to Rattay after I had started the quest in the bathhouse with Capon but managed to miss the rendez-vous at night. All this happened with patch 1.4.1 applied.

In both cases, I could verify that my “abnormal” behavior was the cause of crashes with 1.4.1, whereas I could continue to play the (broken) game in situation #1 with patch 1.3.x applied.

So I am quite confident that this kind of “poor behavior” cause an exception with 1.4.1. I imagine that games saved prior to 1.4.1, in which such “unusual events” happened will now simply cause crashes. Conclusion: behave properly now or restart!

I would gladly learn if others have noted game breaking things not to do if the main quest is to be completed…

(PS. sorry about any mistakes in English here, as this is not my mother tongue)

(PPS. Please, no whining or complaining here! Keep this post useful…)

It’s not even debatable, they are making the game worse with each patch. I’m on the Pestilence quest, and it’s broken. There’s no way to finish it. Reading through these forums, it seems that’s not the only quest that was broken by this latest round of patches. They allegedly fixed 200 quest bugs in patch 1.4, but of course they didn’t bother to make a list of what problems were fixed. Kinda makes you wonder if they just said it to make people happy.

Maybe you can explain how pestilence is broken for you? Did you do something unusual? I completed this quest successfully twice, once with 1.4.1 applied.

There’s a cutscene right after you talked to the bandit. The game crashes to desktop the second that cutscene activates.

Maybe this crash is related to something you did previously: I did not experience this crash myself: at which point did you talk to the bandit? Before or after waiting for the effets of cure?

You have to wait a couple hours after handing out the cure before you can talk to the bandit. BTW, that cutscene can be skipped by stealing the letter from the bandit. This doesn’t fix things, however, as when you get an update to check on the town to see how things are going, the game crashes again.

I tried loading older saves before 1.4, talk to the people in a different order, put the game in window mode, uninstalled HiRes-DLCs, checked file integrity, but the game still crashes on all three occasions (entering Straws house, talking to the bandit, getting the message to check back).
While the first two can be avoided, there is no workaround for the last one, so the main quest cannot be completed right now.
I also noticed some more issues since 1.4.1, two of the most severe:

  • if you get pulled off your horse by someone, the game often crashes
  • Robber Baron: I killed one of the guards after I discovered their location, when I told Bernard I was ready I was stuck in an infinite loading screen

Constructive criticism that might help somebody instead of hyperbole based on your necessarily limited info is prudent.

1.4 had some odd things for me, personally. 1.4.1 has fixed them.

For every other patch I have not found that the game was better in the patch before it. Quite the opposite. It is simply untrue to say “it’s not debatable”. What you mean is that you’ll be mad if somebody says anything else. Stating that literally no standpoint other than yours is to be considered is absolute horse shit.

~edit
It should be common knowledge and perhaps it is, it is just not done because it’s a royal pain in the ass, but with this many patches and so many of the sizes we’ve seen, logic dictates a new game. I have already acknowledged it’s a PITA, in case you choose to take offense at that. It is however a good idea, as is de-fragging before downloading if you’re on PC. I defrag before and after each patch.

In case it might help, I realize that I did not make a full replay of the pestilence quest with 1.4.1 applied: I had already met with Straw in my last saved game with 1.3.x applied (and punched him, so he refused to talk to me after this). Once I had 1.4.1 applied, I reloaded this saved game and was in the monastery. I read the book there, told the monk that water was poisoned and that I could not help him with the cure. He answered to meet him later in Merojhed. I fast travelled there, talked to him, failed to give the cure to everyone (this seemed to be of no consequence). After this I talked to the bandit and did not experience any crash. From what you tell, the crashes could possibly be triggered by Straw’s first cutscene not playing properly with 1.4.1 applied.

Both cutscenes involving Straw make the game crash. I thought I could get lucky and just forgo the first cutscene and finish the quest, but no. This seems to be in line with other people saying they’ve experienced missing cutscenes (although the game doesn’t crash), and the overall file size of the game became smaller by around 4GB.

1.4.1: game crashes every time I’m around rattay mill area.
Loaded save from 1.3.4, used horse to fast travel to the mill and always crash: sometimes when unmounting horse, sometimes when walking to the mill’s door (need to reach my cache). After multiple attempts to replicate the crash it seems that game always crash when henry moves fast (examples: unmounting horse, running to the door).
The indication is the background getting somewhat blurred because of the fast movement > this is apparent when the crash message appears and the screen was frozen: the blur is very visible. Also happens when I move my mouse so Henry’s vision rotate 360 degrees > crash!
i have already reset all settings to default (even sound settings), tried with and without any mod… same result
bottom line: don’t move too fast (but the game then becomes somewhat unplayable)
never had any crash until 1.3.4… is there any way to roll back to it?

Hi, thank you for the report: from what you say, I would first think that this is a gpu issue, maybe with texture streaming, vram/gpu overheating… this is a simple stupid question, but… Have you tried to remove motion blur (it is enabled by default)? Have you removed any user.cfg file?
It could also mean that some files were corrupted on your setup: have you checked the game files in Steam?
Finally, if this “only” happens at the mill, this would mean that the cause is some mill related quest or quest failure, maybe one that should start a cutscene… Any idea?

Confirmed, 1.4.1 made my game start to crash too, which it never did on earlier versions. Mostly to do with the Merhojed quest, but it crashes at other times during other quests too. Just the Merhojed crash is reproducible since it crashes every time.

Hi, thanks so much for responding.
I have never created any user.cfg, game root folder and also My Games folder don’t have the file.
Overheating is less likely… My gpu (strix 1070) has light indicator and not once (1.4.1 or prior) it turns red. I did turn off motion blur as you suggested but crash still happens.
As for quest, I don’t know… AFAIK there’s no specific quest that I’m currently having at the Mill (I have finished wooing Theresa). Well to tell truth the Mill is the only place I ever tried visiting since 1.4/1.4.1 and the crash happens. I haven’t wander anywhere else because I kind like losing my appetite for questing if even one of the most uneventful places like the Mill has the potentials for crashing…
Thanks anyway but I think we really need to push WH to roll back to 1.3.4 while 1.5 is being prepared…
Sorry for my English BTW, not a native speaker here.

I experience two crashes on 1.4.1 (PC, no mods), the game was stable for me in earlier versions:

  • While entering Straw’s house on the main quest Pestilence the game tries to play a cutscene but always crashes to desktop;
  • When I receive the reward for the Talmberg horse race quest the game always crashes to desktop.

Since the main questline is now bugged for me, I decided to quit playing until things are fixed.
