I just wanted to describe how a couple of “abnormal” situations did break the game for me: at one point in the game, before 1.4.1 patch and before the quest in which you have to become a monk (during Pestilence), I managed to enter the monastery through a door that was just opened by a monk. I moved quickly and stole some books and torn pages there (I did not even know what these torn pages were). I must add that I also shamelessly killed some unfortunate witnesses in the process of fleeing the place. Finally, I escaped the monastery through a door in the courtyard. After this non-sensical psychotic behavior, a “reputation in monastery” line appeared on my character screen: as expected, it was set to -100. I did not find a way to recover this reputation (no complaint here as this clearly was not the way to behave), probably because I never went to jail for my crimes. After that, with patch 1.3.x applied, I could enter the monastery whenever I wished through my exit door (it was left wide open by the owners: monks just ignored me or fled whenever I entered the premises). Continuing with this save game, when the main quest in monastery began, it was broken for me since no one would talk to me inside, except for the scripted introduction. With patch 1.4.1, using a saved game in which these events had happened simply make the game crash whenever I enter the main gate of monastery.
Another situation that did make the game crash for me was when I fast travelled to Rattay after I had started the quest in the bathhouse with Capon but managed to miss the rendez-vous at night. All this happened with patch 1.4.1 applied.
In both cases, I could verify that my “abnormal” behavior was the cause of crashes with 1.4.1, whereas I could continue to play the (broken) game in situation #1 with patch 1.3.x applied.
So I am quite confident that this kind of “poor behavior” cause an exception with 1.4.1. I imagine that games saved prior to 1.4.1, in which such “unusual events” happened will now simply cause crashes. Conclusion: behave properly now or restart!
I would gladly learn if others have noted game breaking things not to do if the main quest is to be completed…
