I agree with the general feeling the article is trying to convey, and I’m hoping Kingdom Come can surpass the immersion that Skyrim was able to–and continue to–offer.
i dont think any game will ever beat elder scrolls on that ability to just get lost in the world. In that respect elder scrolls can never be beaten in its enjoyment .
i hope KCD gets close but i dont think they will perfect that touch until they have a few acts under their belts
Skyrim is so far beyond overrated, I agree with everything said in that article only applied Oblivion.
Don’t get me wrong I enjoy Skyrim its just not the game it was hyped up to be or could have been.
TES series is the King of open world sandbox RPG’s, that being said I think KCD could give them a run for their money.
forbes is out of touch and tries to be relevant, but really doesn’t have their fingers on the pulse at all. they should stick to business and finances.
Skyrim was a good game and I spent around 80 hours with it. However the general feeling of the world seemed better in Oblivion to me, despite the many technical and gameplay shortcomings. The map felt bigger and even though there was a lot less content scattered around I didn’t mind. Skyrim’s world felt almost absurdely packed in some areas - people seemed to like it though. I guess I enjoy hand-crafted content being a little bit more far apart in the somewhat dull computer generated landscapes.
It feels realistic and makes it more of a challenge to find interesting places (I usually play without fast travel and most markers). I might be biased though, because I spent probably around 1000 hours with Oblivion’s construction set, but never got into creating mods for Skyrim.
I think, overall, Skyrim is a better game than Oblivion, but I certainly loved both games. I put 300+ hours into both games, and probably 200 into Morrowind.
I agree that Skyrim is a little bit too jam-packed and would benefit from a slightly larger map. It’s also annoying they removed repair hammers. Armor and weapon condition is a required RPG element, IMO.
The main point I wanted to make is that, this article points out the beauty of single player RPG games, and I’m really hoping KCD can achieve something that is more impressive than Skyrim.
Skyrim sucks. Reasons…
1.Its a dumbed down water downed version of Oblivion.
2. 3 hour story for Skyrim! That is not acceptable for a large scale game.
3.Can’t move in combat making it more dumbed down from Oblivion.
4.Waaaay to easy Oblivion was far harder i don’t even feel challenged on Skyrims hardest difficulty.
5. Thieves guild in Skyrim was a joke. You steal like two things then move on to things that aren’t even thief related.
6. Dragons are a complete joke and can be easily 2 shotted once you get higher level. They just land on the ground and bit you as you hit their nose over and over.
7. They took out classes from Oblivion which really pissed me off.
8. The AI is absolutely god awful worse than previous elder scrolls games.
9. Skyrim really does look like ass. I didn’t realize how bad its aged since i went back and played it recently.
10. No acrobatics again dumbing down combat.
11. Crafting is boring you just click a option and bang you instantly have a sword.
12. No durability (dumbing down the game once again)
13. Weapons are stupidly over sized and look stupid.
I could go on and on about how dumbed down Skyrim is and why oblivion is better. People need to stop saying “oh i hope this can be as good as Skyrim”. Well i personally hope to god KC:D is not like Skyrim. Skyrim is dumbed down trash. The world is boring and hardly immersive.
Skyrim is not the pinnacle of RPGS it is not something other rpgs should try to be like. Its over rated horse shit that was completely over hyped.
And don’t you dare to try say Skyrims a good game because its popular. If popularity was a sign of a good game then call of duty would be the best game in the world.
Yeah maybe they can take the disgusting saliva rivers from Skyrim and the god awful textures. And since you’re playing on console i can only imagine how horrendous it looks for you. At least on pc i can make it look redeemable with enbs but it still just looks off.
Most negative, exaggerated post ever…
How so? Everything i said was true. Most of my complaints were stripped features which its 100% true. And everyone does think Skyrim is the greatest thing ever and people always compare rpgs to it. So i dont see how its exaggerated in the slightest.
Yes it was supposed to be negative.
Some of your complaints are valid, and some I agree with. But some of them are just pure subjective, strictly your personal preferences, etc., and using such strong conviction, in regards to your hate towards Skyrim, comes off as very exaggerated as opposed to a legitimate review of the game.
I don’t know if there is a game to look at as the king of RPGs, but Skyrim is certainly a good RPG game, and one of the best games of the last 10 years. Just because it doesn’t fall on your top 10 list doesn’t mean it’s not a good game.
The bottom line is, the point of the article was to point out how so many games are going the multiplayer route (including Elder Scrolls) and it’s a breath of a fresh air for KCD to seemingly be pursuing a true RPG single player experience, with a world to hopefully get lost into.
Please name the ones that weren’t valid.
I don’t necessarily hate Skyrim i have close to 400 hours in it. What i do hate is the attitude that its the best game ever and all rpgs need to be just like it or they suck. Do i think Skyrim comes even close to Oblivion or fallout 3? Not even close. I would give Skyrim a 5/10 an 8/10 if its heavily modded. Thats the only reason i could really stand it was with tons of mods.
Not really. Very short story dumbed down combat, not very good graphics, easy, dumbed down crafting. I don’t see how that makes a top 10 of the last 10 years. The reason its so popular is because its dumbed down and that appealed to the cod player base who didn’t touch Oblivion because it was too hard for them.
Well good news for you the alpha village and country side in KC:C feels much more alive than the biggest cities in Skyrim.
Thats the kind of attitude i have an issue with. Find me one thing about Skyrim that makes it one of the best games of the past 10 years.
I don’t want to nitpick over Skyrim when that wasn’t the intent of my posting, especially when you’ve already made up your mind and don’t seem interested in having a legitimate discussion.
I’ve never played COD in my life, and never will. I am a huge TES fan, and have played every game in the series, but Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim are the only games I’ve spent hundreds of hours with.
Combat was no different to Oblivion for me, graphics were better than Oblivion, and AI in Skyrim was no different than Oblivion.
As for the main story, I don’t know if anyone can play the main story straight through unless they know exactly where they need to go, what to do, where to find it, etc. And, with TES, I consider all the side quests to be a part of the whole game. I put in well over 150 hours when I beat it the first time. I wouldn’t define that as “short”.
I disliked the crafting in Skyrim. So we can agree on that.
I don’t think Oblivion is harder than Skyrim.
So far, I haven’t seen anything to suggest it’s better than Skyrim at this stage. It’s only alpha so I’m holding out judgement. I have high hopes though, mainly due to Dan’s passion.
What’s the point? You’re just going to disagree. You’re allowed to have your opinion, but the vast majority of people disagree with you. It’s one of the best games of all time rated by reviewers too. It’s not just a popularity contest of the “COD” masses. That’s such asinine drivel anyways. It’s really offensive towards people that value an enjoyable, RPG gaming experience. And your elitist comments towards console gamers is just as annoying. There’s no reason to argue so vehemently against Skyrim. I don’t care if you like it or not. I fully defend your right in having an opinion. But if you can’t realize your opinion is in the minority, then what’s the point of me debating it? You just chalk it up to a bunch of a low-brow, COD fans who wanted some watered down, dumbed down game. Get your head out of your ass man. Comparing Skyrim to COD, or, rather, to that stereotypical fanbase, is absurd and just factually inaccurate.
Oh, I know his opinions on it. I’m not defending Skyrim in the sense of me thinking it is perfect. It’s far from it. I’ve mentioned a few times that what got me interested in KCD is specifically Dan’s opinions.
?? Im simply criticizing Skryim and you respond with your points i would say thats a legitimate discussion.
I never called you a COD person i simply stated that Skyrim attracted a lot casuals because of its simplified dumb downed nature.
You cant move in Skyrims combat mean while in Oblivions you could jump and be on the move avoiding the enemies strikes. Thats what made acrobatics so fun i could play as an archer and use my speed and agility to get away from heavy armored opponents. In Skyrim you can swing while moving, and you can shoot while moving. Its dumbed down combat. Sneaking’s also a lot easier in Skyrim. Its almost impossible to get detected at 60+ sneak which isn’t hard to get.
You can easily beat Skyrims main story in 3 hours even if you don’t have any of the locations discovered. The quest markers are painfully obvious and if you don’t know how to follow them then maybe rpgs aren’t for you. Some guy beat Skyrims main story in under 30 mins because he had all the locations discovered thats pathetic.
Side quests are not the main story. And the side quests are quite generic and dull.
I never said the alpha was better than Skyrim i simply said the alpha village and country side feels more realistic and living. How ever the one crafting mini game they have in KC:D is far better than any crafting in Skyrim. Also the Graphics are better in the alpha and the Archery is better and more realistic than Skyrims archery.
Yeah i’ll probably disagree but you boldly claim Skyrim is one of the best games of the past 10 years yet you can list to me reasons why it is. Thats fanboyism in my eyes.
Yes and those same reviewers give COD a near perfect score every year. IGN and reviewers like them are completely paided to give out good reviews.
What elitist comments? Just because i think PC is better doesn’t make me an elitist.
Debatable im sick of everyone saying Skyrim is the best game ever and all other rpgs suck or should be just like it.
Eh a lot of people on these forums seem to agree with me on Skyrim.
Well like it or not thats what Skyrim is. It offer pretty much nothing new to the elder scrolls series and strips features from Oblivion. Skyrim has brought absolutely nothing new to RPGs
Yes reading that gave even more hope for KC:D thank god it wont be like Skyrim.
Based on your original comment, it’s very clear that you’re not as focused on having a legitimate discussion, but rather bashing Skyrim in a very exaggerated way.
This acrobatics in combat you speak of I find very unrealistic. It’s not Halo where you jump around like a monkey while you fight. That’s just silly. I’m more interested in realism I guess.
Your snarky “maybe rpgs aren’t for you” is another reason why I said you don’t want to have a legitimate discussion. Are you incapable of discussing things without resorting to these kinds of things?
People who rush through storylines don’t seem too intent on getting lost in a world. That sounds like people trying to pad their gamerscores or something. That’s not the kind of gamer I am. And, btw, mindlessly following quest markers is not how I’d define someone capable of playing an RPG game. In fact, it’d probably be the opposite…
I don’t know if there is a language barrier or something, but I made it clear that I know side quests are not part of the main story line, but they ARE a part of the game as a whole, and if you’re organically playing through a game, it’s not hard to get lost into side quests. People who are trying to speed through the main story don’t seem too intent on getting lost in their character, into the world, etc… whiiiich was kind of the whole point of the article I posted; getting lost in an open world, single player game.
Umm… okay??
I think Skyrim looked just fine on my 360. Your language is what’s elitist. Of course it looks better on PC, no one can argue otherwise. Making your snarky comments of how “horrendous” it looks on console is just a jackass statement. It is the definition of a PC elitist attitude, and once again, more exaggerated language.
Pretty sure I never said it was the best game or that all RPGs should be just like it. In fact, I’ve said my interest in KCD is all the things they want to do in how it WON’T be like Skyrim, but better than…
Every game that comes out isn’t obligated, and shouldn’t feel obligated, to add something new to its genre. Improving upon existing features, polishing existing features, and trying to create an interested story line, etc., should be goals of any video game developer.
Its not exaggerated i made valid points you have yet to refute any of them.
Um are you serious right now? Elder scrolls is a fantasy game wood elves jumping that high is completely lore friendly. If you look at real combat like a HEMA fight or something sure they’re not jumping around but they’re not standing still clumsily whacking at each other till one of them goes down. The Acrobatics is lore friendly the took it out to dumb down the game and because they were lazy.
This does not excuse that the main story of Skyrim is 3 fucking hours long its so painfully obvious you’re a skyrim fan boy. You dont have to rush to beat the story in 3 hours if you rush you can beat it in under 30 minutes. The thieves guild and dark brother hood story lines are longer than the main story.
The 360 can only run Skyrim on medium to low graphics. I think it looks horrible on the pc to. I can only stand the graphics if i put tons of enbs and texture mods on. Stop trying to turn this into a pc vs console argument
You said it was one of the best games of the last 10 years but then didn’t explain why.
I never said they had to add somthing new but everyone treats Skyrim like its this revolutionary new thing that has never been done before and that all rpgs should aim to be like it.
.
You made some valid points. And then some of your points are a distorted, personal preference, rooted in exaggerations and holier than thou standards, especially for a game made 4 years ago.
First off, nothing I’ve said labels me as some “skyrim fan boy”. I don’t even know what you mean by that. It’s nonsensical and just a ploy to fuel an argument.
As for 3 hours long, I think this is just some number you pulled out of nowhere. Knowing exactly everywhere to go, fast traveling everywhere, not engaging in the world, etc., this will speed up the main story. These are the kind of gamers who RPGs probably aren’t meant for. If all you’re interested in is speed running through the game, then that’s on you. It took me 150 hours to beat Skyrim the first time. It wasn’t a short game for me, or for any of the friends I know who played the game.
Your comments are the only ones trying to make it into a pc vs console argument.
Once again (as I’m sick of this back and forth), the point of my post was NOT to discuss or highlight Skyrim, but the general sentiment of the article in regards to single-player, open world RPGs, and how I want KCD to really push the envelope on this seemingly dying genre (it seems nowadays everything has to be multiplayer, which is a shame).
