Thoughts on Level Caps?

Hi There,

I was playing the game last night and had noticed whilst I was herb gathering. I hit level 20, and saw that there was no progression afterwards…So i’d assume that all the stats, and player level, are capped at level 20.
Upon seeing this. I had lost a little moral in wanting to continue on with my game. When I play RPG’s I enjoy seeing no level Cap. When I play an RPG game, it’s about progression to me. I like to melt a lot of hours into a single game. So when I see a level cap. I lose interest in the game.

How about you? do you like level caps in your RPG’s. I suppose it would work well with games with a high replay value. But this game is not it for me. I’d personally like to play it once, and continue on with a lengthy game.

They are really uneven. Some take forever to raise while others rise fast. My herbalism and maintenance are at 17, and my lockpicking and bow are both around 4 for example.

I’ve always preferred the old school way of getting skill points when you level and spreading them out where you want rather than by how much you do something. It kind of makes you focus on a build where as when you level by doing stuff it makes me want to run and try and level as many things as possible by doing everything and not focusing on the story and build as much.

Gotcha. Yeah I have definitely noticed that. Hopefully it takes a lot longer to get to level 20 for the main, important stats. Although my strength is already @ 12, and I’m just in the midst of the Neuhoff farm massacre mission. “Pretty early on in the game”

Same, I like creating my custom build of a character. Not a “Jack of all Trades” character. Simular to the Mount and Blade series. You could shape your character to your liking.

I like the levelling system, but I also dislike the cap.
I get that no one wants to one-hit everybody in a “realistic” game, but what I dont get is why this seems to be the only option. Why dont you just cap the damage output at 20 an for further levelling just raise the preciseness of bow shots and decrease the stamina costs, or decrease the stamina costs of sword swings and increase the time for blocking…there are so many ways of levelling, why cap it just because you would do too much damage?

Right?

At least this way there is a progression of a sort. That and there is still incentive to play and continue leveling throughout your game.

Level cap is a reason why I stopped playing Kingdoms of Amalur (which is a highly underrated game, imo). I was at level 36 of 40 and the story wasnt near half way through, so I stopped playing because I wasnt motivated to grind through the rest of the game, not growing any stronger.
If they would have released the mod kit by now, someone would have taken care of it already, I am sure. And also if they then didnt have the time to fix the bugs, that would also be no problem, because with a mod kit, someone would surely have made an unofficial patch

Ah, Kinda why it is hard for me to get into the Witcher 3. That level cap of 30 doesn’t look that challenging

Witcher is not capped at 30. I dont know if it even has a cap. I have around 200hrs in witcher 3 and have not reached a cap yet (I am level 52 or so…havent played in a while).

I stand corrected, Thank you

" In the base game, the level cap is 70 - though you’ll probably need to play New Game+ to get there. Blood and Wine increases that cap up to 100."

I think I want to play Witcher 3 now

By the way, if you are on PC there is a mod that will severely slow down your leveling and make the game MUCH harder. Ultimate Realism Overhaul… it’s great.
