We are enjoying holidays in the Alps. Austria now, Italy in a couple of days.
Met this couple from Washington DC with four kids, started a conversation. Asked the guy what is it like to live in DC. The answer was something along the lines:
âItâs absolutely great place to live, especially when you get to see all the great monuments every day. We are enjoying it very much, everyday life is quite nice and compared to Europe, especially dining out is very cheap.â
Asked him about safety.
âIt is very safe if you stay in the right part of the city. Just when I drive car in some parts I am would be really afraid in case it would break down that something would happen to me.â

Yeah D.C is a shithole outside of the monument areas. Has the highest murder rate in the country if Iâm not mistaken, and fire arm owner ship is highly restricted.
My dad actually came back to his hotel after a meeting there one time and there had been a lethal stabbing in the lobby.
He was of course staying quite far from the monuments. But the whole âI hope the car doesnât brake downâ can apply to most inner cities here where close to 90+% of the murders happen.
A friend of mine worked in a black neighborhood as a cashier in a shop. He may have been there on work & travel visa or something similar and his original summer job got canceled and he somehow found a job posting there and took it.
First couple of weeks shoppers were taking pictures of him, always asking him what he is doing there, and on the street they would often stop him and offer him escort out of the zone, thinking he got lost.
Nothing bad ever happened to him and nobody was ever rude or aggressive towards him. The all black community was just completely puzzled by the fact that there is a white boy working in the shop.
Sounds about right. Assimilation is not really a thing in my experience. People stick with their own race given a choice. Although open racial hostility against whites has become very common in recent years. Just the other night at work 3 of my coworkers (two Hispanic, and one Asian) went on a hour long rant about how much harder working they are (while not doing their work of course), and how shit stupid and terrible whites are, and it lead to a confrontation when i finally got pissed enough to say something.
I would not want to walk by my self in an all Hispanic, or black area now, because i honestly feel like thereâs a good chance of being physically assaulted. Even 5 years ago, i would not have had this belief.

What happend
They were going on an extremely racist anti white rant for over an hour. It was after hours we were all cleaning, and the just kept ranting, and i kept my mouth shut until they started talking about how much smarter Indians (from the country India) are than white people. So i said if Indians were so much smarter than whites, why were they conquered by the British.
Then it just turned into shit spewing, with them telling me i was a âfucking white boyâ, and that i should try reading history books not written by âwhite menâ. It was pretty heated and i eventually started yelling back, although i said nothing racial, and stuck to historical facts.
If the roles were reversed how ever, i would have been fired, probably sued, and would likely have a very difficult time finding employment again. Itâs perfectly okay to be publicly racist against whites, but if whites say anything back theyâre labelled as white supremacists, and have their lives ruined. I was not the only one angry about the situation, there was another white person there ( another shift supervisor) who was angry at the things they were saying, but he did not directly confront them like i did, but Iâm glad there was someone else there to witness it.
What scares me is, they act like this now as a minority in my country, what will they do when they outnumber us? Which is what will happen in my life time. I donât want America to turn into a situation like the one happening in South Africa right now.
Just saw Dunkirk. Really good movie, although i think if they showed the French and Dutch rear guard troops fighting the Germans, and the Germans advancing it would have massively increased the tension of the whole movie (to be fair there was a good amount to begin with).
