Unique Sword Crafting

This is a great example of something additional resources can be used for, and for this reason I am very interested to see what happens when the paypal campaign spins up after kickstarter.

I’m excited for the game as it stands right now, without any additions - but I wonder just how big will this thing get?

To keep the trade purposeful, customisation can be done on top of base swords / blades, which you would purchase and then improve upon. I do agree it would be nice to be able to use your blacksmith skills to forge nice and unique items. Its something i think the character in game would insist on doing bearing in mind his fathers path.

This could also add a kind of mini side quest to the game where people could pay you for a specific type of weapon with certain specifications, with penalties for the wrong kind of specifications or if it is made to a poor quality (ie not sharp enough etc)

Even a weapon of bad quality can me made sharp but it does not stay sharp for very long. Maybe you should include some process of Equipment wearing and strength? And of cours all iron weapons and armor have to be cared for if you don’t want them to turn into rust - especially after a day in rain…

The devs mentioned that mini-games would be associated with a lot of the crafting portions of the game but the sword/weapon crafting is by far the most important one to me. As a young blacksmith I think emphasis should be placed on the weapon crafting and that mini-game should be much more in-depth than the others. If the system was detailed I could see myself easily just crafting things for hours.

I completly agree with @Thor_Odinson. Being a young blacksmith would not make sense, if you could not even craft your own sword. But as I am aware so far, you will be able to sharpen your sword in the game (as shown in the video). But can you also forge the sword right from raw materials as well? Maybe I did miss this part of information somewhere…

if you had to spend hours hammering and folding your sword to create layer after layer and therefore a sharper blade you would certain have a unique bond with you sword. it might be a tad boring though.

@warhorse have said that you will need the correct resources to make any item, similar to how you need a certain amount of ingots to make certain items in skyrim.

I would also like to be able to find some “special” or “unique” swords which are not quiet common for this age or region.hearing rumors about something like that and so on. not like they are easy to accquire or produce by yourself. just 1 kind of this in the whole game and also (maybe randomly) hidden somewhere, like an ulfberht, or maybe some meteorite composed of a special alloy.
Maybe also some travelling merchant brings an middleeastern/asian weapon or just some kind of special steel ingot, forged with superior technology unknown to central europe.(of course extremly expensive).
I dont think they need to be like the best weapon achievable, but something nice to play around with. maybe you can also have something like a sword collection?

“+ULFBERH+T” or “+ULFBERHT+” ?

@ Solamyas:

If I remember it correctly, “+ULFBERH+T” was the original name of those swords and swords with the name “+ULFBERTH+” are thought to be plagiarism.

@ Topic:

I like the idea of unique sword crafting too. Would love to see that in the final game!

+ULFBERH+T of course! I remember there is a nice youtube documentation about this

A sword collection would be nice, but i’m not sure about unique weapons made from special materials. That sounds a bit too much like fantasy I think for this game. Maybe if it was something that was discovered in this time period to make it historically accurate it could work.
So for example when steel was first discovered, it wasn’t as common as iron weapons so it would be classed as unique at that time. But I think steel was already discovered by 1400s, so I’m not sure what alloys they could put in.
Perhaps the travelling merchant you mentioned could carry Spanish steel ingots, as I believe that was considered the strongest kind of steel at the time.

yes please … unique sword and armor crafting, i can totally see myself spending hours at the forge or at leather-working, tailoring… please please can you implement something like this in the final game.

I can see this mini-game easily distract from the main game. You would have to select and purchase iron ore, staple it, smelt it for several days, hammer it into shape. This is a lengthy process that can easily take a week. But since the protagonist is a blacksmith, it would make sense to spend some time crafting a weapon. Starting from a blank with the rough shape in place. And the option to increase time (2x)?

You see, blacksmithing is a tough profession… it takes YEARS to become an “acceptable” blacksmith, doing all kinds of stuff. I believe that, if you want to make weapons and armor, you should first find someone that accepts to train you. Second you should invest some “real world to the game time”, like 4-5 hours IRL. THAN you could be ready for something on your own. And let’s not forget that the more complex the object, more money will be spent. An axe is cheaper than a sword, and so on…

I think it would be a great idea, especially If you could do the same with other tools, and even choose the shape of the blade (to a certain degree) but I also think that sort of thing should be introduced late into the game for those who’s characters become skilled in blacksmithing

Great idea. Really hoping it’ll be implemented.

Your character’s background is that of a Blacksmith, so he’s already trained and semi-reputable.

Great idea. I hope the Warhorse implements this.
