I found an ‘unknown potion’ in a stash somewhere and at first I thought that it would be part of a quest or task, but it doesn’t seem that way. I’ve searched the forums and it seems that you can get unknwown potions when you don’t follow the alchemy recipe properly. What’s the deal with these? Are they inocuous? Do they have random effects? Are they toxic?

It is a product of failed alchemy minigame. Should do nothing.
Isn’t it the potion that you can find in the chest of the herbalist in the wood north of Talmberg? The same potion used in “Playing with the Devil” quest.

As Wenceslaus says, it is a product of failed alchemy minigame. But I’ve encountered it as a loot as well. Maybe random?

This one wasn’t made by me, I found it in a chest. Maybe it’s the one mentioned above.
That would make sense, since I also found some demonic dice . I’ve not reached the playing with the devil quest and until now wasn’t even aware of such a quest. I guess I will hang onto anything related
