As I said nerfing the equipment is not a clever solution, it’s an amateur approach that almost always backfires. It causes a whole chain of problematic knock on effects that would lead to a loss of balance and never ending changes that never satisfy anyone. I agree that there need to be some tougher enemies to challenge the player once they get better, but I’ve already mentioned several good ideas that could help with that. What you are asking for, effectively, is late/end game content. Post release, the devs are focusing on bug fixing, but I’m willing to bet you that their first DLC will do two things - flesh out existing mechanics such as archery, maybe add something like fishing and, more importantly, add end game quest content that is outside the main quest line. It seems like a no brainer tbh. We will just have to wait and see.
What? I’m just asking them to patch the stupid AI. Many devs have done that in the past, not in the form of end game DLC.
To be honest once I feel satisfied with how much I have completed with Henry 1.0, my Henry 2.0 will be more of a Ironman mode of a sort. I plan to activate zero perks and use limited arms and gear. Make a it a bit more interesting.
Of course they are going to patch it, it is literally their job. If you want to help in any way and see the game more in line with what you would like, you need to report specific bugs in the relevant part of the forum. That’s what the devs will actually read.
My Henry MkII is going to be a ‘true knight’, in the chivalric romance sense. My digital Don Quixote. That means I can use whatever equipment I want, but absolutely no acts of ‘dishonour’. No stealing, no gambling, no looting. Not even bartering, unless I can somehow justify it in terms of the chivalric code. Helping the poor and needy. Never running from a battle. Only eating when I absolutely need to, sleeping on the roughest beds, under the stars so I can be closer to god and spend more time contemplating the lady whose favour I am trying to win through my selfless acts of heroism. I know, I’ll bleed to death in a ditch before the prologue ends, but it will be a good, Christian death.
I agree, but not only combat perks, but at least the vitality perk where you have a passive heal. I think perhaps the biggest culprit is the headcracker or something perk in which you completely fuck up your opponent if you hit their heads.
I honestly feel the game would be much more difficult and fun with having zero perks. I’m looking forward to it
I agree the perks are fantasy-ish (like fallout) and that combat gets too easy merely because of the odd ‘stamina=no damage’ + your character becoming insanely powerful as you skill up in comparison with AI.
However I do not agree the AI needs to be buffed up. NPCs are actually ‘in the right place’ …its the player that gets too powerful.
The AI doesn’t react when you shoot them with a bow. I think it needs plenty buffing…
I’d like to see the AI with faster reactions and more aggressive reactions.
Perks are silly and often unrealistic, certainly. I do think they could be overhauled so that there’s more emphasis on skills that require player interaction (such as combos and takedown maneuvers). However, I don’t really think they’re the real issue – as the OP pointed out, it’s the game’s lack of any semblance of difficulty that really ruins things.
Warhorse needs to take a hard look at where combat is in this game and what they want to do with it. Authenticity was stressed by the developers, so at the very least, swords should be far, far less effective than they currently are at dealing with armored opponents. Damage values need to be drastically reduced overall.
The strength perk “headbasher” or Headcracker is pretty interesting, it gives you a 10% chance to knock out an opponent with a blow to the head, even of they have a helmet. What can also happen is a lucky arrowshot, that does not hit them in the face but glances off the helmet gets the same chance to knock them out…I can’t tell you how that has hilariously saved my butt sometimes, fighting a heavily armored guy…with a shield…and a glancing arrow knocks them out cold…then I go in for a mercy kill with a mace to the face…lol
