Using your vegetation in my own level in Cryengine?

I’ve tried putting some pak files in my Cryengine 3 editor GameSDK folder, but it didn’t load, and when I replaced it the editor crashed at the start. I would like to borrow just some vegetation, is it possible or you have forbidden it? Thanks

Wait for the official modding tools, please.

But that will be probably at the release of the game, in 2016, right?

Yes, probably even later. Sorry, but we need to focus on the game, not the modding tools now.

They cannot forbid you to do that, at least not in Europe. In USA it is different, because of DMCA. What you are forbidden to do by the normal copyright law is to distribute the level you created using their assets unless they give you an explicit permission to do so.

The usual way how to solve the distribution problem is to require the player to have their own copy of the original game and (programmatically) assemble your level on the players computer. I Googled two examples of people doing this. This is one with Warcraft II. The second is example about music remixes. Since that remix thing is seriously cool, there is a link to one more (much longer) article.

europe is not the wild west. they have their own laws regarding it, usually depending on country.

Breaking DRM in order to exercise customer rights is allowed in Europe whereas in the US it is a crime by itself.

You are right that there are other tools to stop the customer from (even privately) using the game assets; like NDA agreements and EULA. Still, the law in European states severely limits the restrictions that you can place on the ordinary customer, see for example https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endbenutzer-Lizenzvertrag#Situation_in_Deutschland

Does not change the fact that you cannot distribute something you did not create and don’t have a permission. Most countries have in their law system something similar to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fair_use , that means you can for example create and publish a screenshot of your level which shows something you created standing in front of WH’s tree, provided that the tree is not too prominent in the picture…

Should’ve probably prefaced all this by a disclaimer that I am not a lawyer and this is not a legal advice… just in case.

Well, law is not quite the thing here right now, because it seems like I won’t be able to extract those assets till the release of the modding tools. I can’t run this game but can run Cryengine, it really makes me sad
