What’s with all the hype around “virtual reality”?
It’s basically just a curved monitor strapped to the head – isn’t it?

It’s actually two monitors (or lenses) strapped to your head. One for each eye which provides stereoscopic 3D vision. Combined with headtracking and surround sound it makes it feel as if you are IN the game environment instead of infront of it like when using a monitor. So VR is a bit more than just strapping a curved monitor to your head.
Far from it. You not only get true 3d vision but you are able to look around in the game world.
So, in order to play a game in VR I will have to use my head…
Yup…
Okay, that’s nice… but I’m honestly not passionate about it.
I owned a occulus DK2 for a while, and found it not so great. It WAS good for car driving simulators where your body is in a fixed position (eg vehicle cockpit with a wheel in a fixed location) and it was natural to look out the side windows and over your shoulder. But for games like this one where you dont actually swing your arm when you strike a sword and dont actually walk as you walk around I find it unnatural. Maybe the hardware that is soon to be released will be better, and maybe as a player you can get used to it. We will see in time.
Hopefully support for VR is mostly just built in to game engines like cryengine and warhorse can just switch it on rather than putting to much extra work in to it. I think that I will continue to either play games like this on a 2d monitor with a keyboard and a mouse or with an xbox controller on the media pc on the TV.
