Water and swimming

Hello again.

I want to ask if the character will be able to swim in the game. If not, then what will happen when i go to deep waters?

Thank you very much

Your character will drown.

Just remember how heavy armor and deeper water goes together.

(Not well)

Wouldn’t that also depend on what you’re wearing? Since I’m assuming for more stealth-like characters who don’t wear as much armor may possibly be able to swim, possibly.

I would like to point on fact that not many people in this era could swim at all

Fair point, I’m guessing especially if you’re main occupation was blacksmithing. Maybe there might be some kind of training you can get for swimming (although that might be a little bit over the top).

Go into the water and start to move your arms and legs.
In this game you get better via ‘learning by doing’.

In the first Assassin’s Creed game water meant death. So, they probably won’t allow you to go in deep water. Streams and such would not present that much of a problem. This reminds me of Robin Hood Men in Tights: the battle to cross the bridge.

Swimming is not about strenght. A few years old children can swin. But you have to know HOW. And people, common people, had other worries than “let’s go to the river and try not to drown”, Also people were superstitious and they were scared of unknown much more than people are these days.

I’m wondering where you got that idea that people couldn’t swim around that time. I’m not saying that you’re wrong but I just want to point out that fishermen for example always need to know how to swim. And children just fool around all the time so in areas where there are lakes and, not-to-wild rivers, I expect children on hot summer days to just go into the water
maybe just by imitating how dogs swim or something.
I have heard of some superstition in south America somewhere where they believe that women would be taken by some river-god if they would go into the water though.
If you know some superstition tale about swimming form the era and region I am very much interested  .

First of all, I don’t think swimming will be a necessary feature even though it adds to the realism of the game and could potentially give room for some special underwater quests or Easter eggs.

Now if you need to swim you actually need to take all your armor off, else you’ll fall to the bottom like a rock.

Just eat a lot and get really, really fat.

Fat floats.

I think you may have stumbled upon why so many wanted to play as a female character! Their fear of drowning might be alleviated if they have a character with a higher natural body fat percentage. Of course! It all makes sense now.

Remember Bohemia is in middle Europe. No acces to sea and no lake on map (if I remember well). 1403 is not age of aquaparks, so vast majority of people had no chance to learn how to swim or swim at all.[quote=“Treysceusec, post:13, topic:7220”]
I am in disbelief but interested in the statement that not many people in that era could swim at all, it sounds to me like saying they couldn’t climb.

Does it seem clearer now?

I believe knowing how to swim was common in people living by lakes, rivers and seas. Especially the lower classes would learn how to swim at a young age, when still allowed to play (very young, because they soon had to work and had little time for fooling about in the water).

As long as there are rivers or ponds I’m expecting anyone who works on or near the water knows how to swim. I’m quite confused about all this “People in the 1400s didn’t know how to swim” nonsense. I mean
since when do you need special training to tread water?

I’m not so with this one
However on game map is one river Sázava.

would like to see swimming if you are in light clothes or no clothes, though if you are armored would slow you down in shallow water (knee too waist height) and even drown your self.
