Why a set face?

I understand like in the Witcher the face for the character was set because is was based off books and they wanted to stay true to the books, but is the face for this character so important to the story that it would be less immersive if you could change the facial features?? Because to me role playing games are all about making a character and being whoever you want to be. I do understand though if the reason is because it costs too much and takes too much time to make a character editor or that the money and time would be spent better elsewhere.

Yeah… It would be a waste of resources, when you are in 1st person mode 3/4 of the game.

waste of resources? i don’t follow. the game still has to render your face/head for dialog or inventory.

imo they have a set character whose face reflects his background. so young blacksmith. if you want to edit his face, there would probably be only 4 or 5 other logical selections. so not really worth it…and by editing his face, i mean choosing from different heads. completely customized facial settings like mount and blade or eve always look terrible and unrealistic.

face customization is more for those rpg games that let you play as a 50 year old chinese wizard or some stupid shit like that.

Maybe quality assurance. From what I seen the face generators don’t usually end exactly real looking. Set face will have advantage of being individually done by artist and having natural looking imperfections.

Waste of resources meaning time and money from Warhorse if they made a character creator like other major rpg’s has

Yeah, that is definitely true, some one had an article titled like spend 5 hours making a character in skyrim and only to never see the face again .

I think this is pretty much correct. They also plan to do full motion controlled cutscenes so having a set face would make it much easier and more realistic.

Yeah I guess that would be the most logical reason, well thanks guys for answering my question.

in the last update, they also said they make the heads from 3d scans which are then optimized, so that does make sense. you get the most detailed and realistic head that way.

also, dan vavra’s head is scanned in the game. see here:

Well if they support mods, then expect to see custom faces pretty quickly:D Perhaps even before the beta ends…

I totally agree. Is the main character going to go around the world looking for mirrors?

@warhorse One thing I would like to see is horse customizations: clydesdale, quarter horse etc along all with pros and cons in battle.

I also found this disappointing at first, but after thinking about it for a while I can understand why they’re doing it. The character you play isn’t just some generic Adventurer Dude, but a specific character with a pre-existing background, so Warhorse can’t allow for too much customisation. E.g. he’s supposed to be young, so having a wrinkled and aged-looking face would make no sense. However, I have no doubt that there’ll soon be mods out which allow you to customise your appearance.

Yep, I agree. Maybe the technology has improved but in every game that I have customised a face, it looks amazing from one angle but then in some cutscene or another it goes complete stupid looking. If there is a set face, then the animators when designing a scene can ensure your character is expressing your emotions properly.

Why a set face? Because this is the story of Henry the unlucky blacksmith, not CHARNAME.

This is something I’d actually really like to be able to do as I prefer to role-play myself in another time and place rather than embody another character.

I do understand the reasoning behind it (primarily that the face can be crafted better manually and be totally unique to your character), but would love to be able to make adjustments nonetheless. I also get that we’ll be playing as Henry, a per-defined character with some history, but anything that can make Henry feel like an alternate version of myself the better :).

I don’t mind a set face and voice at all. Sure it’s nice to be able to customise your own character in every little aspect, but I don’t mind that who he is is set, but we can still decide how to dress him and what things he should be good at.

One thing I would like, though, is be able to choose between hair styles and beards. That’s realistic to do in-game, I think. Hair grows. I just want my Henry to have a biiit more beard and a biiit more hair.

Because it is story about Henry who has his own face, not some random generated “hero”. So it’s the same case as Geralt. And i think random face would cause some serious difficulties for proper face motion capture, lips and talk sync etc.

@SavageBeatings As i recall, we will be able change his hair in-game.

Yeah, I’m almost certain they said custom hairstyles are in.

I quite like the look of the character at any rate, not to gruff or Hollywood, so overall I’m happy enough.

He looks rather fair, that along with him being a blacksmith, he reminds me of Orlando Bloom in Kingdom of Heaven! And I reckon he will also be a regular commoner who is destined to do great things, become some sort of knight and decide the outcome of a large battle! Haha

Maybe a face is set because of performance mo-cap. I don’t know much about this thing, but I would guess it works only with a face similar to one which is captured?
