I am currently trying to get the armour out of the chest in talmberg, but after using a savior schnapps before attempting to pick it, it no longer gives me to prompt to open it. I have lockpicks too! Since I can’t do this, I can’t pursue this quest in the way I want to. I waited a month to get this game so I wouldn’t encounter gamebreaking bugs, but lo and behold, I run into this garbage barely after I start my playthrough.
Is it the quest where you must “aquire” some “attire” for the “miller”?
If so, have you tried pickpocketing the guard with the key?

Are you trying to escape talmberg? If so load the last save and try again. Or just knock out a guard and take his armour.
You have the option to jump from the bridge too I think

No, it is the talmberg quest at the beginning of the game
Look in the tower, there’s an unlocked chest with armor.
After about 5 or 6 failed lockpicking attempts, the same thing happened to me, Jlevine. (Playing on PS4 Pro.) The chest nevermore gave me a prompt to even attempt lockpicking. Rather than resort to an older save, I took it as a sign (figuring the game was trying to tell me something ;-), found an isolated guard, knocked him out from behind, stole all his equipment, wheezed my way to a horse, & haven’t looked back since.
P.S. There was no unlocked chest in the tower for me: just 2 locked chests, one hard & one very hard.

happened to me at a normal chest. I have dropped 648 herbs and picked em up again. After that i was able to lockpick again
I closed the game completely and then restarted my save and then it was fixed
