“Most of the germans back then were spineless” <-- words from my Granddad who was shipped from Nice to Stalingrad as disciplinary for not showing the “Führer” the proper respect. He lost half of his face there but made it out alive. Am I innocent of the crimes of my Grandparents? Of course I am. Do I have the obligation that something like that never happens again in Germany? Of course I do. How fragged up would I be if I would love a regime like that start to kill people again only because they belive in the “wrong” god or aren´t white?
People who joined the SS or Waffen SS belived the shit Hitler was spouting and blamed everything that happened in the Weihmarer Republik on anyone else (Jews, Gipsys, Bolschewiks etc.). They wanted to feel great again. Well actually the same crap that still works for little men today all over the world.

Günter Grass, for example, joined the Waffen-SS when he was young (but only mentioning this when he was extremely old and already a noble prize winner), later he wanted to lecture anyone, including Israel, how to behave in a morally correct way. A lot of people were annoyed by that (not just “right wingers”), just like they can’t stand so called “champagne socialists” from Hollywood and their empty talk (“I will leave this country, if Trump becomes president!”), especially those, who praise multiculturalism, although usually living in an environment that is not “multikulti” at all. 
Besides that, learning from the past also means that in Germany we should ask ourselves, if some remarks like, for example, the ones of Karl Lagerfeld in a French talk show should be dismissed so quickly as some German mainstream media has done.
