Buying a PC: Need advice!

Rub it in why don’t you lol but I’m still happy with my baby. Probably last another 3-5 years before I’ll really need to upgrade.

Well, if I had to put that much money into a PC I would also expect it to perform above console level.
But it’s a shame really you didn’t go for the 1080, would have been the icing on top.

@chris67 Read my other comment. The game on my PC looks and performs waaaaay better than it does on console.

Hmm … yes, I never said contrary?

I’m getting pretty much 60 fps in most areas on ultra with the shadows and shaders turned down to high. Yours should absolutely obliterate it

You said I should have got a 1080 when I already said I had a 1080ti.

Oh, my bad, I thought your recommendation was actually your rig. Misunderstanding!

Yeah I get 60 fps (vsync on) on max settings everywhere apart from some parts of Rattay. I expect the optimisation patches will see me at a constant 60. Actually it’s 66 because I overclocked my monitor, but you know what i mean. With vsync off it would be over 100 FPS on average.

Yes, that sounds like a really good rig for gaming.
What would be the best price for these parts? I think we’re aiming 800/900€?

My budget would be more around 600/700€.

Change the cpu to amd one you’ll save tons of money. It’ll be marginally worse but not noticeable.

The problem is the grahpics card. Prices are unnaturally high because of crypto mining. See if you can get one second hand from a friend that hasn’t used it to mine. There are no good deals on new graphics cards as far as I know. Be wary of ex mining cards.

AMD CPUs aren’t great for gaming though. High clock speed on at least four cores, maximum six is the sweet spot. Also with AMD CPUs you need faster ram to get a similar performance level, and ram is another expensive component at the moment.

They’ll make do for a shorter budget though. I’ve OCd my 6 core to 4.3ghz. It runs quite well if you have a smaller wallet. It’ll still destroy a console that’s for sure lol. 3200 on ram speed should go along well.

Yep, these damn bitcoin miners.

This picture speaks a lot (price variations for 1070 since 2017) :

Your computer is nowadays mid range. If you changed your CPU for something decent, it would be mid-high range. since you would be able to take advantage of the GPU more as it wont be CPU bound. The R9 290 is an excellent GPU on par with a 970 so great for 1080p with 8 GB you can push those textures high as hell.

A 1070 is an high-end system, a 1080 is a waste of money and a 1080ti is kind of the super high end.
I tracked a second hand 290x for a friend pretty cheap (less than €200 on ebay) and it is awesome. 4GB version still plays anything at 1080 with high/very high settings depending on the game. If you install the 3xx drivers you should also get another boost in performance unless AMD changed the drivers so that you get full advantage of everything.

I got a 980ti a couple of years ago and honestly, I regret not getting a 970 and just upgrading as new models came out. Now I will lose a lot when I finally trade it away.

Yeah, NVIDIA says they are going to lock their GPUs so you can’t mine on them but I wonder. It is a huge cash cow for them and AMD especially.

As for your budget, I would either try to find a great deal like OP did or go to the second hand market. Do you have all peripherals and an OS key?

Monitor mouse and keyboard is what I mean. You could get this good non mechanical keyboard and mouse combo for something close to €20 a couple of years ago but the screen, I recommend a 24 inch IPS display. It will have slower latency but the colours are worth it. That could set you back €100 or €150. If you already have a screen and €600 is your total budget, I would be happy to help you track down some good parts if you tell me your location. I am used to doing it to help out friends and I like doing it.

In Germany VAT is 19% so it is usually cheaper to buy new from there but seriously, second hand GPU is a must these days.

This is a great card that will probably sell close to €200.
I would look for the r9 290 or GTX 970/780 and see what you can find. If you find better deals up from that then the sky is the limit. If you could get a 980 or 980ti for decent prices, the performance you would get would be quite different. I have a 980ti and I basically play this on Ultra at 60 FPS with increased draw distances. And it is not a good overclocker. Core is boosted to 1400 MHz and memory is stock. If I touch the memory it starts freaking out…
Whatever you save on GPU you can splurge in a decent CPU. If you can get a hold of one of those i5 8400 that would be awesome. Those things are really good. Plus, 16 GB of DDR4 RAM at 3000MHz or more (depending on the price) will ensure that you keep those CPU bound situations to a minimum. People say RAM speed doesn’t matter but that is not true especially with big open world games like Witcher and KCD. I have no pop in texture problems and I get a very smooth performance on my i7-6700k at 4.0GHz and I think that my fast RAM has something to do with it.

At the time I was on a budget so I had no choice but to go for a cheaper cpu so that I could allocate more money to the gpu. And the companies aren’t gonna lock out their most profitable customer just like that, it sounds like marketing bs to me lol.

They are not locking anything. It is just that the GPU is too fast for that CPU at 1080p. Higher resolutions it works but you will most likely find yourself CPU bound plenty of times. It’s like this your GPU asks for 10 things of your CPU and your CPU can only do 8. So he does those 8 and then he does the other 2. Meanwhile your GPU is just waiting there for it to finish. Microstutering is one of the indications of a CPU bound game and open world games tend to be heavy on the CPU. Seriously, even if you get an i3 you will see an improvement. Or one of the new quad core Rysen CPUs. Those are pretty affordable and a lot better than the Excavator cores in the FX lineup.

Well, it’s up to you to put value to all those parts and especially the combined value, if it’s such a big deal for you to build your own PC, then know that you will pay premium for the privilege, and you don’t get to choose the parts (to an extent).

So, the CPU is not a very good one, it’s not bad, but it seems like you’re setting yourself up for hard times in the future. The combination with a Z370 board is simply retarded, there’s no other way to describe it. You’re throwing away money on a board & CPU that aren’t meant for each other.

The GPU is overkill for 1080p gaming, I don’t play 1440p, but I imagine it will be enough - which would actually be a good choice if you take a “weak” CPU, as it’ll benefit from the added load on the GPU at 1440p.

You’re paying 100 GBP over its current worth, and that’s with memory and video cards prices in the sky.

Try to look for something that is more in-line with your needs (I can’t imagine you’re going to OC anything if you don’t even want to pick your own parts) so you won’t pay extra for features you won’t use.

Asus rog Rampage V extreme x79 socket ( 120-200 $ )
6 core i7 or xeon processor, ( 40-150$ )
2x8gb 2400 mhz ddr3 ram - ( 80 $ )
GTX 1080 ti

I think this one is cheapest variant for best quality cheap products on market.
