Cherchez la femme bug?

So I kidnapped Margaret and now I should make Nicolas sign his confession. However when I talk to him I can’t ask him about that. Any ideas how to fix this (apparently very buggy) quest?

I had no bug problem with this only timing to the horn and being close enough to get there in time., unable to get a clean kidnapping and a jail warrant.( consoled that away and talked away a guard later when going to the huntsman)

It is still very buggy. If you are on console you are pretty much screwed till they patch it.

Oh, they didn’t patch this yet ?
I finished the game with version 1.22 (very stable, almost no bugs)
Hare Hunt MUST be failed in order to finish “cherchez la femme”.
How did you get “cherchez la femme” ? Via “wolf in clothes sheep” or “hare hunt” ?
You MUST start “hare hunt” first. It fails when you meet Mr. Hare and choose not to kill him. Then “cherchez la femme” begins.
The path where you start “wolf in sheeps clothes” is BUGGED : it also triggers “cherchez la femme”, but you CANNOT make Nicholas sign. (oh god even the forum is bugged, why is the reply box stuck at the bottom…)

Yeah Hare Hunt didn’t fail for me. I don’t know which quest I started first. I played “Sheep in Wolf’s Clothing” to the point where you have to meet Black Lukesh. Then I continued with “Hare Hunt”. I went to Olena and then to Betty. She gave me the location of the clearing but there I found nothing to interact with. Then I went to Margaret and she told me about the meeting with Hanekin Hare. So I went to see him and believed him. “Hare Hunt” didn’t fail. So I met him and kidnapped Margaret but I didn’t hear any horn if that matters. Well and now I’m supposed to force Nicolas to sign but I can’t. So should I restart everything? Will it work if Hare Hunt is started first?

I play on PS4 by the way.

Yes, you must start with “hare hunt”. You can pick “wolf in …” by the way, (which will be completed when you meet Mr. Hare), but “hare hunt” must be started first; then fail (which is stupid because it should complete or “switch” to “cherchez la femme”).

Yes, unless you start again, you won’t be able to complete these quests and become master huntsman.

Huh, and I thought this would be included in their so-called 200+ quest fixes…

So, version 1.22 is still the best one ? Ok, I won’t get the saddle from Zora (but it won’t crash) and the vagabond is stuck in the pillory, but other than that, I could do EVERYTHING and FINISH the game.
And I have my St-Georges sword, I have random encounters, performance is ok, lockpicking isn’t “dumbed down” (I’m on PC) etc…

Yeah well I also didn’t really have any bugs until now. Well besides that one bug where you can’t interact with the chest in “Clothes make the man” but that’s another story. Anyway thanks for the help, I’ll try it out. Oh and by the way how do you get the St. George gear and sword? Was it patched out or is it still available somewhere?

Just checked my save files and saw that I started Hare Hunt first. Maybe there is something else I did wrong?

As I said, I played my whole game with 1.22 . Maybe they changed things.
What I mean by saying that in my playthrough I had to start “hare hunt” is that otherwise, during the “cherchez la femme” quest triggered by “wolf in sheep…”, the dialog/cutscene with Nicholas signing doesn’t start.

I first found the St George sword during the bath quest with Hans, after that, I had an after-thought and was able to return the sword to him during the quest where I COULD interact with the chest (his chest) you mention.
I found another St George sword in the “end chest” that we were not supposed to open…
But, at the end of the game, when accompanying Hans, where I arrived to the location, Hans said I could take things from this chest, but his guards attacked me because the game considered it stealing. Huh. Last bug of the game I guess. Nevermind, I already took almost everything earlier.

I started the 1.41 game (duplicate installation) with a 1.22 save and my sword was still in my inventory. (as was Bianca’s ring - because I went straight from 1.22 to 1.41 I suppose)
But I keep my 1.22 installation for now.

Check other threads about these three quests. That’s how I figured it.

Well since I did what you said and nothing changes for me I guess there’s not much more I can do. Maybe I shouldn’t have played the first step in Sheep in Wolf’s Clothing? Just take the quest and immediately start Hare Hunt? I don’t know. It’s hard to keep track with all the patches and what they fix since there are no explicit patch notes. But they say every time that they have 200+ quest fixes which doesn’t seem to be the case. The same goes for the St. George sword, they seem to change it’s location with every patch. When I did the bath quest it wasn’t there but I also heard that some people lost it after a certain patch. I’m not at the end of the main quest yet so I’ll have to see.

I tried to find a solution for all 3 quests but as I said it get’s complicated if the solution becomes different with every patch… Anyway thanks for your help, maybe it will be fixed with the new patch.

Maybe I wasn’t clear :
quest paths :
hare hunt > cherchez la femme = works
wolf in sheep > cherchez la femme = NOT works (Nicholas will not sign)
hare hunt > wolf in sheep (optional, get it when speak to andrew) > cherchez la femme = works too
wolf in sheep > hare hunt SCREWS the quest script, at least in 1.22. Do not start “wolf in sheep” BEFORE “hare hunt”. And it’s optional to complete “cherchez la femme”, you don’t really need to do it.

any ways : hare hunt fails when you tell Hare you believe him (if you kill him, it completes, but you won’t be able to become master huntsman)
wolf in sheep completes when you meet Hare. but it is optional. forget it.
there is no known way I think to succeed in all quests : hare hunt has to fail in order to succesfully complete cherchez la femme. AND hare hunt is the quest that must be started first, by talking to Nicholas.

Yes I know. And as I said hare hunt > wolf in sheep > cherchez la femme doesn’t work for me. I started with hare hunt. When I talk to Hare and believe him, wolf in sheep is completed but hare hunt doesn’t fail…

ok, maybe the new patches corrected the fact that “hare hunt” fails. But in this case, the rest of the quest should work. (with “hare hunt” being completed either when “cherchez…” starts or when you make Nicholas sign ? both situations would be logical) that doesn’t seem to be the case since you said that Nicholas won’t sign. conclusion : still bugged. even worse.

It’s probable that part of this bug is caused by the fact that “cherchez” can be triggered directly by TWO diffferent quests. Is it really one quest or two, just sharing the same name, script-wise, for the game ?

maybe if you skip “wolf…” entirely ? or maybe start from scratch with “wolf…”, this time trying to skip “hare hunt” ? hair pulling, isn’t it ?

Yes it is. Tbh I don’t even understand what’s the connection between Hare hunt and Sheep in wolf clothing. The one is about Hanekin Hare and the other is about poachers… Why should Hare hunt fail anyway? Doesn’t really make sense to me. Anyway I guess I’ll try some of the options you mentioned.

“hare hunt” 's goal is to catch and/or kill H. Hare, the chief of the poachers. So I assume it fails when you choose not to do it. Although, as said before, it should just be “cancelled” as other RPGs do when you “switch” sides in a quest-branch. (but KCD doesn’t do this)

As for the vagabond bug (stuck in pillory ) before the last patches, there must be a script missing when you go the way wolf>cherchez. So you are forced to start with a quest that you will fail (why ?) in order to complete “cherchez” (at least in 1.22, because this doesn’t even work anymore now, as you told me)

Didn’t know that Hare was the leader of the poachers lol. I thought I’d help him because he seems to be the victim but I still wanted to catch the poachers. So that means I automatically help the poachers if I help Hare? Maybe I should just kill Hare and complete the quest this way?

well (spoiler), Hare was framed for a murder he didn’t commit. So he’s a good guy. His poachers are like Robin Hood…
But why not, I suppose the quest will complete if you kill him and bring the proof to Nicholas. Buy you won’t be able to get Nicholas’ job as huntsman (he’s the bad guy).

Yeah I know, but I didn’t know he was connected to the poachers. It’s funny that you don’t even find that out if you play this path. Anyway I want to help Hare but if I can’t complete the quest this way I have to finish it another way. Isn’t there also a point in the quest where you can inform Robard about the poachers and then ambush them? Because that would be my second favourite way to finish this mess of a quest. I could also go all the way with sheep in wolfs clothing but then I will have to fight Talmberg guards right? and I don’t want that…

It’s a very delicate quest but it can be completed. I previously completed it on the X1 1.3 patch, but it took two tries.

Talk to everyone you can as the option opens
Go to Hare after speaking with Margaret the second time
Wait until about 6 am the next day and you see Nicholas leave
Go directly to Margaret after meeting with Hare the second time
I persuaded her to come with me (not sure if that was a factor or not)
After meeting with Hare the third time (I believe)
I went straight to Nicholas and confronted him along a path between Hare and the Huntsman’s house
Quest complete

The first time that I had your issue, I did other quests\exploring.
Another attempt I had a few “dead end” quest markers where NPC’s wouldn’t talk to me.

On all attempts the game never acknowledged the bones in the clearing NNE of Talmberg.

There’s a post somewhere in the forums of step by step (including when and how long to wait between quest advancement) that helped me through this quest, I can’t remember where though.

Which quest did you start first?

I talked with Olena and Betty but I didn’t talk to Margaret before because once I asked her about Hare I couldn’t ask her about him the second time. I didn’t wait exactly until 6, just went there in the morning and persuaded Margaret to go with me. Nicolas was also somewhere in the woods when I got the quest to force him to sign but still nothing.

After I got Hare Hunt and Sheep in wolfs clothing I didn’t do any other quest in between.

I didn’t find anything at the clearing but I guess those bones you mentioned are also bugged for me.

Even if I find this guide, do you think it would still work with the newest patch? I just wish WH would give us explicit patch notes so that we know which quests get a fix.
