Climbing in game

I noticed in the Alpha you can get up on roofs fairly easily. Is this a bug or permeant feature?. Because i could see multiple uses for small scale climbing in game especially if you play as a thief type character.

Now keep in mind i dont want any assassins creed style climbing. I would just like it you could maybe get into a two story building that has guards at the door.

I want to follow up on this comment that it’d be nice to have accompanying animations for any jumping, climbing, and hurdling. For example, jumping over fences is very Skyrim-ish, when I’d prefer something more like Far Cry or Assassin’s Creed where there’s a “hurdle over” animation, etc.

Agree completely. Our soon to be knight is not a parkour master. My reference to those two games was not meant to imply KCD should equal those character’s abilities, but simply that those games do a decent job of having animations for multitude of contextual situations (jumping to climb up onto a roof is a different animation than jumping to hurdle over a fence, etc.).

omg yes we could scale buildings with our katana’s strapped to our backs :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah I was amazed to see Henry scale a thatch roof at quite a steep angle. I assume someone gave him roofies or something similar.

Well i was more hoping for a small scale climbing system. Not like Assassins creed or anything like that. The ability to scale at least a two story building would be helpful to steal things.

Wow all you experts making fun of the OP. You think in medieval ages there weren’t thiefs who climbed houses or walls to steal stuff? Especially back then, when everything was made out of wood and stone where you had edges that you could grab, if anyone saw an old medieval house or castles or mills you know what im talking about. No one is talking about freaking assassins creed here but something that would be useful for a thief, because you all want to play as a Warrior/knight class that you just put aside the idea of being a thief or a bard because you dont want to play as one, doesnt mean other people wont.

also crouching? i don’t mean like on skyrim it activates SNEAK but i mean someone is walking by and u just crouch behind some cover so they don’t see you. also it would be nice to hide from some pesky archers  Or did KCD already confirm this?

I believe they said in one of the videos that sneaking wouldn’t be like Skyrim where you just crouch and go invisible. I hope its more cover based like Dishonoured or thief.

There should be an option to hide and peek around corners, etc. That is an aspect of stealth and also a benefit to combat and surprise attack, etc.

Well luckily we don’t have long to wait to see what the stealth is going to be like in this game. But @TobiTobsen could you possibly tell us anything about a small scale climbing mechanic?

Greeeeeeeeeeeetings chaps!

Climbing … yes… kind of… but rather on places we want you to. Like ladders, maybe small walls, fences and stuff. BUT it surly won’t be a free to climb world… no AC 1403 for you guys… sry!

no need to be sorry. I don’t think AC style climbing is that much fun. Plus it’s already been copied too much. Shadow of mordor for exemple

I want to play as a thief, so I am looking for climbing, this will add for sure immersion.
But I am not looking for AC feature, instead something like Shadows of colossus when you were climbing on the colossus with the feeling that you could fall down and as well having to care about the grip bar. Yeah this was Rock and Roll, Baby.

I specificly said i didn’t want AC style climbing. Just basic climbing that would allow you to scale something like a small 2 story building.

How does climbing on a roof actually help you be a thief?

Getting to a window on the second story would be one way. And as an archer you could use the roof as a vantage point.

Correct me if I am wrong but I believe only townhouses frequently had a second story with windows covered by shutters.

The point about the archer seems reasonable, however I hope you have steady feet since a lot of roofs look pretty steep.

I know you did. And I take no issue with the basic pulling your selve up on edges or hurdling over a fence animations but tobi spesifically apolologised that it wasn’t AC 1403. Worlds in wich you are free to climb everthing you want tend to spam repetetive watch towers, for mission exploring across the map. I would prefere climbing to be restricted to the situations in which it is interesting to having it over represented. But I must say claimable roofs as sniper spots + burnable enviroment would be quiet something. Too bad that’s not happening.
