Combat System Update!

So the video update has been released! What do people think? What did you like/approve of? What did you hate? My personal highlight was seeing the massive group of reenactors at the beginning, funny stuff!

Heres a link to the video.

Overall it looks good. I’m kind of curious why the player character could get run through with a sword and still stand and fight, but then again I was unable to see things like armor or where exactly he was struck with the first person camera.

Like i already state on KS. I will update my humble pledge. I like what i saw.

It’s still a game, not real life simulator like Flashpoint / ArmA - one shot/strike = death. Game = fun, not frustration.

Possibly its just an early animation just displaying a stabbing attack, in the final game it is reasonable to assume a more finessed animation.

Do you think there will be dismemberment? Maybe in real life and with an armor is uncommon, but I think some damages to unprotected parts can be made…

I really like what I’ve seen so far. I wonder if the reenactors or martial arts experts have tried out the system to gauge the realism. As a reenactor myself, I am very keen to play a game that feels real. To get further in a game because of my already existing sword experience would be awesome.

One thing I would like to see is the compromise between protection and visibility that has to be made when choosing what helmet to wear. Towards the end of that clip, the opponent was wearing a pig-faced bascinet, which offers excellent protection, but severely limits visibility. If he was stabbed in the face, he wouldn’t take damage, but his view would have dark areas, with only little windows to see out of. Conversely, if the character wears a simple sallet, then his view would be completely clear, but a blow to the face could be fatal.

Other than the automatic blocking, I love it. Maybe the player has to change the direction of blocking (Depending on direction of attack) while holding the button, similar to War of the Roses?

I think that could be linked to sword maintenance. If you keep your sword sharp and have lots of strength AND strike an unarmoured arm or leg, there should be some chance of dismemberment. As you say, with armour, it would be very unlikely.
EDIT: Actually, it should be only possible with certain types of weapon. A sharp halberd swung at full strength toward an unarmoured limb could very easily slice through it.
(I am only allowed three comments on each subject! I could type for hours about combat, but… apparently I can’t) :frowning:

Good job! It looks really nice. Cant wait to try it!

I like that idea, although defending is easier than attacking and should be reflected somehow. I think also that defending should use much less stamina. It is an acceptable tactic to let your opponent wear themselves out

Maybe as a treat every once in a while but making it too easy would kind of undermine the realism. Loads of arms and heads rolling all over a battlefield like a morbid Monty Python skit.

Nop. It’s hard to dismember anything during fight. And with all those various armors? Not a chance.

What if you are fighting peasants, and hit them on their wrists or ankles?

Maybe less directions for blocking than attacking then, just 2 or 3. I think the feature where you trick the enemy, by switching attack directions, should also be used against you.

For those of you interested in some of the real life things they mentioned in the video, check out battle of the nations. It’s the full contact medieval tournament a lot of the fighting scenes were taken from. In the beginning of the video you see a knight with a quartered tsbard that was blue with red and white stripes. He is a member of the American team that competes in the contest.

As far as the swordsmanship goes they are practicing German long sword of, I believe, the system of Johannes Lictenauer.

I’ll post some videos once I have access to my PC rather than my phone.

I liked what I saw, it looks better then a lot of other mele combat systems.

The main things I would critique are no mention of guards/stances (Which were the cornerstone of middle ages combat/fencing) and the one-button “block all” button.

Not a fan of defense that amounts to simply pressing a button. There should be skill involved.

I would have loved to have to actually block a hit with the mouse. Like you have a “defense button” where you press it (as it is now) but this merely “readies” your shield/buckler, then you have to move your mouse in the direction/area you are being attacked from.

Then they could use this to balance out shields. A buckler for example would have a smaller hitbox, but the animation/movement is very very quick, so you can quickly bring it up and block hits from many directions. Whereas a larger shield might hav ea bigger hitbox, but it’s slower and not nearly as quick as using a buckler.

Then you could also have offensive moves with your shield when you bring it up. IF you say, press both the shield button and thent he “attack” button it might do a shield bash.

As far as offensive goes, I’d like to see some grappling and half-swording.

Though I understand it’s still very early on and things are a work in progress, they might very well be planning something more then what they were able to show. Even not it still ooks very fun.

I am very excited about what I’ve just seen and heard. Although there is still a ways to go in ironing out specific movements, what we saw was basically a work in progress and still impressive. Under another thread there was concern that the combat system would be too difficult for some of us when comparisons to Dark Souls were drawn, but clearly this video confirmed not only will there be multiple ways to obtain your objective (stealth is my friend, lol) but if we find something too difficult we will have the chance to level up before trying again. I am much less apprehensive after viewing it.

I also liked what I saw. While it looked a bit stiff at times, I’m sure the motion capturing that we’ll have with the next stretch goal will iron out that.

I’m really curious as to how defense is going to play out because a block-everything button seems a bit over-powered. But that likely depends on how the fights play tactics-wise. I think the point of fighting here is not to hack your opponent in half but to counter-attack until you have wrought him down.

I think that the block-everything button will somehow be stamina dependent, and you will be able to use it for a very limited time. That being said, I’m not very fond of it either.
