Dog companion kind

Lovely dogs as these are (Bull Terriers), they really are quite a modern breed, being bred around the mid 1800s.
I used to have one when I was a young lad, a tougher and more loyal companion you could not wish for, they are brave and will face anything down.
Mine stood his ground against an army truck (my dad’s) and when the driver inched the truck forward, Caesar launched himself and tore a chunk out of the front tyre.

The mighty Dachshund, tho it would make the game to easy, no need to fight, as the mighty dachshund would just eat all your enemies.

What about the mighty chihuahua, Poodle, Shih Tzu, Pomeranian, Maltese, Chow Chow, Shar Pai, Miniature Schnauzer, Samoyed, Pekingeze, Papillion and of course the Pembroke Welsh Corgi??

I would love to see a Chodský Pes (Bohemian Shepard) as the companion dog.

I think the ability of chosing between a selection of dogs should be done. They are enough good proposition here, and one should be able to complete a story with one dog, and start another with another.

If we add like 1 special behavior/ability per breed (I know nothing of dogs, but I know for sure there are some characteristic traits shared in a breed, and i’m not talking about physic aspect), and 3 random behavior so even if you chose the same breed in two adventure your dog can be different.

Add with that the ability to train your dog so it’s brave, shy, introspectious, can distract, or just lazy (you give him too much food or leave him on a carpet state), grumpy (because you just don’t feed him enough or don’t play with him), easily distracted willing to always play (because you play with him too much), and you have a cocktail of awesomness.

Those would have no affect on the game, but solely on the ambiance. It will increase the repetability, witch is these days and in this type of game is always more than well acclaimed.

3 Random behaviours for 3 set styles.

Knight - Fighting/Defensive dog
Bard - Playful/Circus dog
Thief - Hunting/Distracting dog

The fighting, defensive, playful, hunting should be skill that you could train, not some behavior that would be randomness.

Behavior was more about cuddle friendly, a lot of energy, running around more than other, more other npc friendly, as i suggested

If Wikipedia is to be believed it appears to be a dog native the country and that dates back to the 14th century. It’s temperament lends itself well to becoming a watch dog. So mayhap that is the canine for our game.

Full support from my side for the bohemian shepard. Awesome looking dog.

A Mastiff dog breed. Large dogs commonly used as safeguard dogs, hunting and warfare throughout Europe.
Think of them as giant bulldogs. Really giant.

It’d definitely be cool if there were different dog breeds availible with differing stats that could depend on the dog’s size/weight/agility, I did a quick search and came up with a few examples that were probably around in the 14th century.

A lot of people have suggested local Czech breeds like the Cesky Fousek and the Bohemian Shepard, but there’s also the smaller Pražský Krysařík, which despite its size was a popular ratter breed that traces its lineage back to the middle ages as well, and being easy to train, quieter than other small dogs, easier to teach tricks, agile and being overall much less noticeable than a shepard or the Fousek, it’d make an ideal companion for a thief character.

There’s also other ancient breeds like the aforementioned Alaunt, various breeds of old Mastiffs (English Mastiff, Spanish Mastiff, Dogue de Bordeaux and the now-extinct smaller Doguin, Alpine Mastiff, Neopoltain Mastiff to name a few). *EDIT @Raizo’s been significantly quicker in mentioning mastiffs but I want to keep my list nontheless

There’s also the Anatolian Shepard, the Greater Swiss Mountain dog and the Bullmastiff. and about a billion different kinds of Hound

Someone else also mentioned the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog, but I did a bit of research and they’re a relatively new breed (although that isn’t to say there weren’t any wolfdog hybrids in medieval Bohemia).

I was reading the conversation and readied my mouse to pull up a few wiki links to read up on the dog breeds mentioned and I have to thank the people who previously posted a nice link for references. I’ve always been partial to the larger dog breeds, but at the same time, I have to agree that it would be awesome if there were different types for certain “occupations” have you. As @Cristari example insinuates, I think it’s a rather good idea. Of course it’s up to the developers in the end, but it would certainly add something unique and original to the game that I haven’t seen yet (not saying it hasn’t been done, but to my knowledge this would be a cool, original idea).

Though if we could “choose” a companion some how through the market or perhaps befriending one somehow, that would also be nice. The shepards who be my first choice since I’m partial to them.

what about a blue heeler x ridgeback

hey guys,
im just wondering if the dog is oblidged to get. i guess a dog might be a nice thing, but to me it feels like a disrupting element.

I only wish they don’t make the dogs overpowered on somehow increase their historical usage. After all, dog is a dog.
Also, dogs should most definitely be killable and skinnable. Sorry, but if you can do this to a boar or a bear or a goat, you should be able to do this to a dog.
In-game, if someone kills your dog companion, you should be able to just get another one if you want to spend time training and developing its talents. Again, no overpowered dogs please. I hope Deliverance won’t force you to have dog as a companion if you don’t want to.

They already said its something you “can” get, so in all likelihood it won’t be mandatory.

But even though a dog is “just a dog”, I think some people may be overlooking how dangerous a well trained attack/hunting dog can actually be.

I wonder if they’d make a Medieval version of Riley from COD: Ghosts as a joke?

A Neapolitan Mastiff would be great, or to start with a smaller once and getting a bigger later. like startig with an yorkshire terrier and ending with a huge mastiff

Honestly, what came to my mind would be an Irish Wolfhound. A little bit of research shows that they’re an old breed, so I feel it’s entirely possible for them to have existed in the location and time the game takes place. It also seems that the breed has a wide range of personality, so that could be fun for the devs to work with.

Would it be possible to use my trusty dog companion for archery target practice or as a emergency source of protein? (I am not trying to be mean: I am just curious what degree of freedom this sandbox game would offer…)
