History

The 62 years old king Charles IV. (Karel IV.) of Bohemia died and his 17 years old son Wenceslaus (Václav IV.) has been new king since 1378. Until father’s death, Wenceslaus was safekeeping his younger step brother John (Jan) in Royal court. John then took his residence in Görlitz.

Wenceslaus chose John of Jenstejn as his highest chancellor in 1379. In 1380, there was a huge plague epidemic in Bohemia. In 1385, king consigned brother John administration of Brandenburg. In 1389, pogroms in Prague which led to burning of the Jewish quarter.

Chancellor John complained about king’s leadership. King tortured to death one of chancellor’s men in 1393. This escalated a conflict between French aristocrats united with Moravian margrave Jobst (Jošt), Wenceslaus’ cousin. Together, they attacked the king in 1394 and arrested him nearby Beroun.

King’s brother John marched with army to rescue him but in the meantime aristocrats escaped and took Wenceslaus to custody to castle Wildberg. In Prague, John chosen new royal treasurer and aldermen. Afterwards, he started a military campaign in Southern Bohemia but was forced to negotiate about releasing his brother in exchange for himself. Instead he gave the capturers of king castles Krivoklat, Karlstejn, Zebrak, Zvikov and silver mines in Kutna Hora.

After king was released John fell into his disgrace for changing the staff in Prague and debts created for holding a huge army. The king took off his bailiwick in January 1396. John unable to pay his debts resorted to Neuzelle Abbey where he died a month later, probably poisoned.

In 1397, king received more complaints about his rule. John of Jenstejn lost his political influence as all his properties were taken away from him. In 1400, he died in Basilica of Saint Praxedes, probably murdered. King was deposed from Roman throne. Wenceslaus did not agree with deposition.

King Sigismund (Zsigmond) of Hungary, brother of John and half brother of Wenceslaus, kidnapped the king in 1402. Cumans, Hungarian speaking tribe living in nowadays Hungary territory for about 200 years, are invading Bohemia. They unite with some bandit groups and hide in the forests and prepare to besiege the Bohemian castles.

Map is covering 16 square kilometres in Act I. In-game currency is Groschen (Groše). In-game weight is Pound (Libra).

Possible Downloadable Content

There was female character promised during Kickstarter but later was cancelled. It may appear as DLC. Woman character DLC should add a line of quests in the beginning of the game. A woman will rescue Henry.

They also worked on dog companion (Alant breed: extinct) which did not get proper combat animation. However, dogs will be present in basic game.

They had blacksmithing mini-game and also skill ready but was taken out due to unpleasant result and can be expected probably in DLC.

Combat

You have 6 basic melee directional moves. Stab, (STAR) slash from top, slash from top left & right, slash from bottom left & right.
Depending on which part of armour you hit, thus you will cause damage to armour, decrease opponent stamina, decrease health and cause bleeding which leads to slow death. Enemies have morale, so for example he is bleeding, he can run away in time to save his life.
When you are hit in combat, first you will lose stamina which can be used for blocking, attacking and running, then if you are badly armoured or hit in the weak-point, you lose your health and die.
You can kill target instantly (silently) with dagger which otherwise does not work as proper weapon, so I am unsure if it is actually possible to fight even if you are disadvantaged by it.
Your weapons will collide with objects around you and, of course, enemy weapon as well. You can possibly disarm your opponent, not confirmed.

Weapons

You will be able to equip 3 types of weapons: slash, pierce and blunt.
Dagger (only stealth weapon), short sword, long sword, sabre, axe, mace, hammer, polearm, halberd, spike, bow, shield. No crossbow though.

You can pull enemy from horseback with polearm. You can fight one handed and two handed weapons. One handers are set to main hand slot, two handed occupy also off hand, thus including shield and torch.

You can sharpen your sword with sharpening stone wheel or pay blacksmith to do it himself and he can also repair your broken armour. You should wash your clothes and weapons off blood and dirt, no additional info on this.

Armour

Armour determines how much stamina you drain while fighting and also affects the effectiveness of different weapon types.
Plate armour is strong against slashing, worse against blunt attacks.
Chainmail is weak against stabbing, a little better against blunt attacks.
Gambeson is weak against stabbing, a little better against slashing.
Brigandine is something between plate armour and chainmail. Weak against blunt attacks, a little better against stabbing.
Lamellar armour is weak against stabbing.

Stats

Strength, agility, vitality, speech, charisma, visibility, conspicuosness, noise, speed.

States

Health, stamina, rest, food.
You will have to eat and sleep to survive. Your food can spoil. If you are not sleeping enough, your screen will be blurry and there will be closing eyes animation).

Skills

You will be able to hone various skills: fencing (special moves and combos), defense (no additional info), hunting (no additional info), mining (no additional info), fishing (no additional info), lock-pickiping (chests and doors), stealth (infiltrate enemy lines), alchemy (poisons, antidotes, potions, brewing beer), herbalism (knowledge of flowers), horse riding (no additional info).

Minigames

Minigames are skill based.
Dice - Game is called Farkle. You can play for money or without it. You throw Dice which have 6 sides.

Dot 1 gives you 100 points, 5 give you 50 points, three of a kind give you the number times 100 points, except for three 1s which give you 1000 points, for example 3x Threes give you 300 points. Every futher die after gives you double, for example 4x Threes give you 600 points, 6x Threes give you 2400 points.

You must score each turn 1 or 5 or three of a kind and select at least one die, if you want to continue rolling another round. But you can decide whether you throw or not. If you decide to stop, you will get all the accumulated points, if you fail to get a point in another round, you lose the points you stroke in a row.

If you score in all rounds in a row with your dice, you will get chance to throw with all dice at once again with the same rules applied as before. If you fail to score in another round, you lose all points in a row…

Your goal is to get more points than your opponent.

Bonus: you can find or buy cheating dice later on in-game which will give you advantage in playing it. For example you will have only Ones or Fives in there.

Cooking food.
Alchemy - using gathered herbs with help of recepy in book. You also use time and heat for the making.
Sharpening weapon -.using wheel and pedal, you either sharpen it right by turning the weapon towards rotating wheel or damage it and decrease its damage and durability.

Inventory

You have 20 slots available for equipment. 16 for clothes, 4 for weapons.
Legs (4): padding, hose, footwear…
Head (4): helmet, cap, coif, necklace.
Body (6): hood, chest armour, shirt, tabard, gauntlets, arm armour.
Hands (6): arrows, bow, main hand, off hand +2 rings increase your social status.

Your character has limited inventory set by weight. Time does not pause while you are in inventory.

Horse
You can ride a horse which has its own inventory and stats. It can automatically ride forward on the road. Horseback archery was unofficially confirmed.

Horse can deal charge damage (like in Mount & Blade). If it is heavy and fast, it does more damage.
Horse stats: agility, vitality, courage, charisma, visibility, noise, speed.

Animals
Animals are available. Dog (not companion), chicken, sheep, horses, pigs, cows, rabbits, boars, deers, bears, butterflies and birds. No fish and cats though.

Animals could deal charge damage to you. The same as in example with horse.

Crime system
You can lock-pick chests and doors, pick pockets. Doors could look different depending on their difficulty to unlock. If you enter forbidden room (example bedroom), an inhabitant may follow you there or send you away.

Crime system was not working well during beta but they plan to add it to final game. Whenever you steal or kill someone, and there will be witness, or the person you attack will flee, he or she may run for local guards or inspector whom you may pay a fine or talk your way out, or be taken to local prison. There is reputation system which is determined by your deeds to local people. You can bribe guards, inspectors and merchants. You can haggle prices (bribing). You can not customize your character appearance. You can customize your stealth, impression and intimidation bonus with clothes. You can drag dead bodies.

Reputation

Positive - succeding in quests.
Negative - killing and stealing.
Seperate for villagers and soldiers.

Q&A

Q: Body animations and lip synchronization.
A: We are working on it. It is in optimization stage and is done as the last thing.
Q: DLCs.
A: We are thinking about it. There will be stuff that did not make into final game on time.
Q: Stealth mechanics.
A: Visibility and noise affect stealth. If it is dark, visibiility is lower. If you wear shiny armour, it is higher.
Q: Does night (time) affect the game any other way than in the crime system (stealth)?
A: Daily cycles. People go sleep during night. People move from places to places. Your food gets rotten.
Q: Are you making demo version of the game?
A: No.
Q: Do you have to eat to survive?
A: Yes. If you eat a lot, you will get slower. If you eat little, you get dizzy. You can not eat during combat.
Q: Are there any extinct animals in the game?

Sweet Lord Almighty that was a lot to read.

They are planning to release it first on PC, later on PS4 and Xbox and later Mac and Linux.

Were. They were planning that, but now it’s all at once and no Linux.

People believe that the end of the world is coming.

People believe it’s the end of the world right now. Nothing new there.

You should wash your clothes and weapons off blood and dirt, no additional info on this.

It’s a social thing. If you look dirty, nobody wants to talk to you and you’ll pay more for goods. But if you look clean and rich, everybody likes you and will get discounts. And if you look Cuman, you’ll be attacked and banned from buying anything.

Uhm, okay, so what about having your own home and… wife? They said something about that right after the game was announced, did this also taken out or something?

No own house.

Where did you get from that Linux was cancelled? Last official statement I can remember was from Kickstarter Update #52:

[No] support for Mac and Linux platforms at launch

Though I do concur that it seems highly unlikely it’ll ever see the light of the day, especially with them being stuck on an older version of Cryengine, due to all the customizing.

To the OP: very nice and thorough writeup!

Don’t you all think that sucks? Where do i supposed to sleep or gather usefull stuff? In a barn or inn? come on…

I’m not sure about this logic. Surely if someone looked rich, merchants would want to price gouge them, they’d feel better about it as well.

I don’t know about the mentality people had about this at that time though, would people see someone rich and want to charge them less ?

I can see it for nobility, for the intimidation factor.

Too short.

That makes no sense whatsoever. Obviously a plate armor has plenty of padding underneath, so it’s the most efficient against any tpe of attack.
So much for realism.

Now that is just redundant. Nobody wants to sort through that many items with a shitty console UI inventory.

What a disaster.

I think it depends on severeal circumstances.

  1. Does the merchant expect to see this custumer again? If so it wouldn’t be smart to cheat him or her. Especially if they look important or like someone who looks like best not to tangle with.

  2. Which goods are bought or selled? A noble man should know the prices for weapons, armors, golden fibulas etc. which they normally buy by themself. Or is it some stuff like eggs, bread, etc. that normally his or her servant would buy, so the nobility isn’t expected to know the normal price.

Someone who looks really poor wouldn’t often seen as a potential customer. Rather as a potential thief.

Didn’t pause to think that maybe you have that many equipment slots precisely to be able to equip layers of padding underneath your plate armor, did ya?

While I agree with your logic, I’ll make it modern for comparison.

If you look poor - homeless today - most people want to avoid you and, if they can, charge you more so you’re less likely to return because your grubbiness brings down their store credit.

If you look rich - let’s say a Hollywood celebrity like Matt Damon - people love you and would give you cheaper prices to please you and have you return more often.

If you look like a Cuman - let’s go with terrorists/Muslims - people will be terrified of you and will bar you from places for safety. Guards - Police - will most likely be called to kill you or remove you from the area.

Greetings Sir! I respect ur answer but I as a Muslim want to clarify that most of people in world believe that Muslims are terrorists.Believe me the image of Islam shown to western world is not true.I live in Pakistan. This country is considered as home to terrorism.but True Muslims are not terrorists instead terrorists (group of mostly foriegners) are using the name of Islam for their henios purpose.for example if terrorists use disguise of Christianity Christians do not become terrorists

Ummmm. TS like to duck the brains.

Total game-play time is higher than this now. I think even from a pure story perspective, excluding side questing and other activities, KCD would clock in above this figure. The game is not split into three smaller Acts any more. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be sequels though. Simply that the scope for this initial release has grown

We may be able to change Henry’s hairstyle. But this has yet to be confirmed. There’s also been talk about facial hair growth and re-growth (after shaving or cutting hair, it will grow back over time). In addition to scarring. But as I said, all TBC

I don’t agree, why would someone lower prices for an extremely rich. I can see them not raising them of course (modern setting), but not lowering them. Someone that rich won’t be pleased by (or notice) saving a few dollars.

I don’t think the comparison to celebrities is justified, it would be similar to someone walking in with a very nice suit and an expensive looking watch or something, celebrity is something different.

Being in a bad area wouldn’t be good for a store, but I can’t see one homeless looking people being there would hurt them to the point of overcharging.

That depends on the store. Someone sells things to peasants, they aren’t going to discriminate in that way. If it’s a rich store, then sure.

The idea is to make it so they woudln’t know they’ve been cheated. They’re rich = Money doesn’t have the same value to them.

Merchants that sell those expensive things you mentioned would only be selling to rich people, so I don’t think there’s any argument there.

Didn’t pause to think that maybe the game would be much more playable with just having all that padding on the armor pieces by default and saving 90% of the equipment slots and 99% of inventory tetris that way, did ya?

There’s always someone complaining that this isn’t being made to their taste. First we had people whining that it isn’t co-op, then an MMO, or not fantasy. Now we have you whining that it isn’t casual or simple enough for you. Just find something else, not every game on earth is going to be as you want it.

They aren’t going to start cutting features because you can’t deal with anything complex.

Q: “WHY AREN’T THERE DRAGONS THO - WHY NO MMO”

No because the armor layering system has been a selling point of the game since the beginning.
