Forum performance

@sedrickcz Thanks for using Discourse! As a Drupalist I am interested in web technology and I just found out about this gem thanks to you! Works even fast on mobile networks since content loads as needed and not all at once.

Btw, the language categories don’t seem to load properly. All other categories work.

This Discourse forum is absolutely terrible :frowning:

  • Some pages are wider than my browser window with no way to scroll horizontaly (in my profile/preferences for example).
  • I hate the scroll-to-bottom-to-autoload-new-messages feature.
  • Scrolling is not smooth at all, it’s really annoying. I like to click the wheel button on the mouse and then move the pointer down to smoothly scroll in web pages, but here it’s stuttering like hell.
  • When I’m reading a topic and go back to the previous page, the forums puts me again at the top of the topics list instead of remembering my position in the list.
  • I had to enable cookies for some third party site so that clicking on buttons would work…
  • This edit window is tiny with no way to make it bigger even though Firefox can theorically do it since a few versions ago (and I’ve used it in practice too)…
  • I have to change the Firefox option to let web sites choose their fonts in order to see the many icons (like the “like” button etc.)… The fonts on this forum are ok but it’s not the case on many other web sites which is why I normally disable this option.

Also I don’t necessarily want everyone to know which posts I’ve “liked” and stuff like that…

Drag the bar up, it will grow.

A regression we will be fixing shortly

Much of this is out of our control when it comes to custom styling, do you see same stuttering on http://meta.discourse.org ?

Custom styling is out of our control do you see the same issue on http://meta.discourse.org

Thanks, that’s a bit better.

Great.

Yes.

No.

Another problem is that the forum breaks middle-click to open in a new tab. When I do that, Firefox tells me it prevented the site from opening a popup window. But anyway it’s usable for what little time I’ll be spending here I suppose :]. Thanks for answering.

Edit: I see you’re one of the Discourse authors, so in case you find the info useful, here’s my setup: Firefox 27 on Arch Linux 64 bit, with the nvidia blob 331.38 on a GTX 660, Core i3 (1st gen).

I was just by accident browsing the forum on my Android phone (4.4.2) with Chrome and it seemed like the mobile version did not work at all. The pages were exactly the same size/width as in normal desktop browser, no text wrapping, no easy navigation, etc. Basically, it was not readable.
I tried also https://meta.discourse.org/ which worked quite well.
Do I have to do anything particular to get to the mobile version?

It’s because our design modifications. We had to switch off mobile version for now. But we will be fixing it soon.

Thanks @sam for help :+1:
