Hello and 3rd person

But in fact…would it be hard for @warhorse to give some players, who prefer to play in 3rd Person instead of 1st a 3rd person-view? We’ve seen so much 3rd person stuff in the video updates…

It’s definitely not hard, especially they have it shown in many of their videos. As a soon to be developer myself, making a 3rd person camera is very easy. It basically involves repositioning the camera as well as some extra player inputs binding. The controls don’t have to be super sophisticated though, and they could still have the same controls as a 1st person camera.

@hypish

The only sticking point could be the HUD.

If you watch the latest update video on combat the HUD has definitely been built for a first person viewpoint so they would likely have to build a second optional HUD just for third person.

Programming/technical issues aside, I find it very strange that there are people on this forum behaving as if the addition of 3rd person as an option would somehow ruin the game for them. If you prefer 1st person that is fine, but why would you actively seek to deny someone the option for a 3rd person view just because you personally don’t like it?

I don know your problem it will be 1st person.
They will release every tool to make mods and you will see after a bit of time you will have your 3rd person view for those wich dont want to have a bucket next to the pc.
Unecessary topic again and again and again…

You do have a point there. Yea HUD could be a fair bit of problem which will impact the overall gameplay if some of us are to play the game entirely in 3rd person view. Maybe the dev would kind of make this 3rd person view option exclusively for kickstarter backers. That would be awesome though.

I don’t mind 3rd person at all to be very honest. I used to (and still do) love playing TES Oblivion. It has the option to go first person AND third person for player needs. It’s a benefit for both. It’s a great option to have both to make all players happy. On the other side, it would be harder for them to adapt their combat system to 3rd person.

Because people like you don’t realise that 3rd person view is huge change for the game. It’s not just about camera and other tech issues. It’s also about missions design, for example some stealth ones. With 3rd person view you can look around corners and do similar silly stuff which devs must count with. And that leads to ruining the game for others which are happy with much more immersive 1st person view.

Okay, but this is a single player game so how does it ruin your play-through if someone opts to use 3rd person on their play-through? I’m not sure I understand your point about the devs having to deal with people looking around corners breaking the mission design. Any game I have played where there is an option of 1st or 3rd doesn’t seem to alter the mission depending on the POV, but I am certainly no expert so perhaps you could explain it to me if you have time? I concede that it can make the game easier in certain scenarios and perhaps it is less immersive for players who prefer 1st person but I still fail to see how this ruins the game for you if you can simply choose to play in 1st person.

Not sure what you are getting at here @Dekssan? If you believe that the stealth in the game will be easier in third person then just don’t use that view, the game developers will make the game with first person as the priority so all missions will be designed around first person parameters.

The only possible drawback would be development time spent on overcoming any technical problems such as the HUD, but I don’t expect that would be too difficult.

Yikes I jumped in here late, and there are way too many comments to read before I leave for work. So I want to say that adding third person would be relatively simple. Combat animations are created and the character models are already created. So while combat in third person may be difficult you could still do it. The developers can create the game exactly as they intended too, but offering the choice to go third person would make many of the non-combat related activities more enjoyable for most of us. The only thing they’d need to think about is how to make it intuitive. I’d recommend binding it to the R3 key on a controller.

Though I’m a first person guy myself (I’d even like to see all the cutscenes in first person - If you’re going to do it, might as well go all the way :)), I wouldn’t mind seeing third person added for those who really want it.

That said here are my concerns with adding such a feature:

It’s not as some suggest completely trivial or free. It would still take time to implement and test and I’d rather the time was spent getting the first person elements as good as they can possibly be. Certain camera shakes/animations which could give the player info in first person view might be barely noticeable in third for e.g. Sure, alternate systems could be quickly implemented for the third person view, but it takes design time and then time to implement and test (time which could be spent elsewhere).

Also as others have said, third person view allows the camera to look around corners beyond the physical limitations of the character. This would alter the way the game’s played and definitely require a lot more testing than if there were just one mode (looking over walls can also cause visibility issues for e.g.). Testing costs time and money.

Plus, due to camera clipping issues tight environments tend not to favour the third person viewpoint (ever notice the large over-sized doors and high ceilings in many third person games?). I wouldn’t want to see Warhorse compromise on their realistic interiors to accommodate this additional view.

And finally, maybe Dan + the team feel that the first person view is the most immersive/best way to play their game, but know that if they offer a third person view as well many of you will not even give it a try. You’ll just select third person from the outset and never give it the chance it deserves and thus miss out on much of what they’ve worked so hard to achieve/make the game feel unique?

I think that it’s impossible because of combat system at least.

Go check Thief Deadly Shadows how terrible is 3rd preson view in archetypal 1st person view game…it does not bring anything new and it’s not useful for anything else except taking few very cool screenshots…

I would imagine that adding the option for 3rd person wouldnt be a huge issue. Most of there animation creating and graphics tests are done in 3rd person so they can see and get a handle on what animations are happening. I like many above prefer third person especially for the combat so im better oriented for surrounding enemies. As well as enjoying the look of my character. I dont mind playing 1st person shooters as they dont make me sick. My wife however cant watch me play cause it makes her hella sick! I would love to have the option to switch between the two so that my wife can watch and apperently play… she shows alot of interest in this game and wont be able to watch or play without having the option.

On contrary I think it would be an issue,

Sure enough basic third person would be easy. But the one used for animation and graphic test is not really suited to be used by players. Trying to implement it may either lead to odd bugs like camera being on other side of the wall from character and similar, or they will have to spend significant time to prevent such bugs and in the process they will probably sacrifice development of other areas. Even lot of games designed for third person suffer from similar bugs and sometimes can’t avoid weird camera.

  • Yeah, I agree. As I said in detail in my post above, it’s not as simple as people seem to think.

@brooklynunder - " I like many above prefer third person especially for the combat so im better oriented for surrounding enemies"

But maybe the developers want to avoid this ability of having 360 degrees of situational awareness? It does alter how the game’s played, and what about if different helmets do end up restricting your vision - How would that work in third person?

Except for those that has cranked their FOV up high, play in 3rd person and can see people coming from behind. Even when they are doing that thing where they look at their feet and do overhead swings, because the hits will land almost instantaneously on their foes, and since they are in this 3rd person high FOV mode, it doesn’t hold them back using this exploit.

3rd person is partly cheating.
You can look around corners even you aren’t looking around a corner if you know what I mean.

But it should be up to the player to decide to cheat or not. If I want to I can always edit memory while playing to give myself unlimited health/etc… If a player decides to use 3rd person to cheat that’s their problem.

I kind of feel the same way about 3rd person, if a player wants to ruin the experience of 1st person and use 3rd person, let them (no you don’t have to include a fancy 3rd person beautiful camera code/optimize it at all, just include the stock CryEngine settings and let the player suffer for using 3rd person). No extra work on developers part necessary other then maybe creating a bind for a key to toggle between the two (which takes about 4 seconds of editing in a config file).
