The setting could certainly allow for some interesting moral decisions and quandaries, so I was wondering if KCD will be built upon moral ambiguity and not black-and-white ‘‘Good vs evil’’ tropes.
I think Dan Vávra somewhere said that he wants to go in the direction of Red Baron Witcher 3 quest.
But even befrore Witcher references I think there was always talk about non black and white story telling.
I would not worry about that.
Thanks for the info
I think that the game should not touch morality at all. Just do faction reputation. Kill 100 Kumans, and the Peasants and those loyal to Wenceslaus will hail you as a hero, Kumans and those loyal to Sigismund will brand you as a devil, and those who are neutral will be wary of you (Because, seriously, killing 100 dudes is terrifying, especially if you did it in melees). The game should never even imply that what you did was right or wrong, there should only be the world’s reaction to your actions.
That has absolutely nothing with what we’re talking about…
Morality as in ethics…
Yeah, I know, and what I was saying is that the game should not address it. At all. How is killing 100 people NOT a moral/ethical issue to you?
It is, but saying that a game shouldn’t address morality means it’s bland, plain and non-human. Morality and ambiguity are aspects of human society. You’re basically just saying that all it should be is a gore-fest and the more you kill the more you’re rewarded…
No, I’m saying that the game’s only response should be character reactions. If I found a wallet in a parking lot irl, and I decided to keep it, do you know what would happen? I would have someone’s wallet, and someone else wouldn’t. There was no cutscene, and no “karma-meter”. The only one who thinks about the ethics of that situation is me, if I don’t no one will do it for me. It should be like that in the game. If you want to think about ethics, go ahead, if you don’t care, be a sociopath. The game shouldn’t do the thinking for you.
You’re being ridiculous. I used that example because killing 100 people is a serous ethical issue, and you will most likely not be stopping at 100 during a play through. But if you do not care about ethics, the game should not bother you with them. If you do care about ethics, ponder all you want. But the only change in the game should be how the characters react, the ethics of it should be up to you.
Not everything needs to be a game mechanic, you know. The best role-playing is all in your head, not coded by some Czech guy you’ve never met.
Game mechanic? WTF? I’m not talking about game mechanics, I’m talking about plot elements…
When a “plot element” in a game is influenced by gameplay, it becomes a game mechanic.
It’s not influenced by gameplay though…I have no idea what you’re reading…
So… According to you… When the plot changes depending on your actions during gameplay… It is “not influenced by gameplay though.”
You said “The setting could certainly allow for some interesting moral decisions and quandaries.”
If the player HAS a decision, it becomes gameplay. Because when the PLAYer interacts with the GAME, he is then PLAYing the GAME, which is GAME-PLAY.
Alright, but I don’t see what’s wrong with that? Why don’t you want that?
It is more authentic for the characters to simply react to your actions, and then all thought on morality be left to the player, because that is how it is in reality.
If you are mature enough to play KC:D, you are mature enough to meditate on your actions. If you do not care about ethics, or if you are playing as someone who does not care about ethics, then you should not have to be bothered by the game about ethics.
Also, adding “morality” in a game always results in developer bias. Even if they try not to be biased, they will be.
It’s become plainly obvious that you have no idea what we’re talking about. I don’t want a ‘‘moral-indicator’’ or something…
The game should (and I believe it will) be full of biases.
Of course there should be plenty morality lessons (not say necessarily good). Game takes place in Christian country, for the petes sake. It will be full of prejudice against any minority.
Wanting this game without being “bothered” by ethics is like wanting a pizza without the tasteless edge dough. If you want that I suggest any modern FPS.¨
This is not a pure action game, this is mostly adventure game. This game should tell a story.
I hope for some morality in this game… like if beat and rob a poor guy for his money and some NPC see me or ear about it they should not react the same way as if i help NPC in the need and they tell other im a good man it should help me. So i want morality in the game but only if NPC are aware of what i do good or wrong.
I appologize for my english.
That’s not exactly what I meant when I asked it. I meant it in a sense like the Witcher 3 or ASOIAF (game of thrones), where there are plenty of moral dilemmas and ambiguous characters.
Do you mean being good or bad when talking to NPC or the impact of our choice… Like stealing the blacksmith flute or not? Maybe the farmer will open his mouth at the tavern so you can be arrested for theiving! (Sorry i did not play those 2 game) I just hope that we cant kill any one and run free exept if no one see us.
No, no, no. I’m talking about real dilemmas, moral dilemmas, not deciding to be good or bad, those shouldn’t be options…There should be option 1 and option 2, both of which are ambiguous in moral nature.
