My suggestion would be to find a nice tree with a noticeable area that you can call a “target” away from civilians.
Do some target practice for a bit, and just pick your arrows back up. You’ll notice Henry’s skill begin to increase, as well you as a player will get a better handle on the aiming mechanics.
Effectively, you need to practice to improve like a real person =)
Another question. How do you increase your archery skill? Hitting people - that much is obvious. But can you train your archery, like you train your swordfighting? Hitting targets or winning archery competitions at the archery range doesn’t increase my skill. Any tips?
I think I had to do the archery competition like 5 times before the skill level went up.

I used the Chumps competition that you can play with Vatzek. You can buy-in for 10-50GR which isn’t too bad. If you come in first you take the pot, second gets your money back, and third you just lose out. First + miss no more than I think 3-5 arrows and you get a special prize. I digress though. I would play this over and over through the day in scoring around 10 hits on the logs, I would earn around 60+ points to my archery skill. I am still new to the game but it’s a fun, easy, and potentially prosperous way to earn quick archery levels while honing your accuracy.
There is an achievement/trophy for headshots. Grab them when you can.

You hate Archery? You can’t Hit a Thing? Im sry for you. Either Training or Just dont use it. AS Bernard says “The bow is not the preferred weapon of the knight.”
I’m an archer IRL, and I love archery in this game, so much fun, just difficult enough. A cross hair makes it far too easy, might as well play bejeweled. But, it could be improved by changing the position of the bow on the screen to provide a natural sight/aim picture by looking down the shaft of the arrow and/or using a fixed point on the bow as an aiming reference, just like in real archery. It’s a simple change that would make a big positive difference, while keeping with the realism.

TBH I’m both stunned and disappointed that this, the supposed most realistic combat RPG doesn’t have iron sights functionality for archery, it’s beyond ludicrous. For me archery is my favourite thing of any game, if a game has archery I’m almost certain to buy it, loved the most recent Tombraider reboots pretty much because of their archery! Far Cry is another that has decent archery, especially Primal that was great!
It’s not trash. Don’t mistake you not understanding for the game being trash. I don’t mean that in a dickish way. I know it sounds like it. But you pretty much use the top of the arrow to aim. Literally where you aim it will go. Don’t forget to cancel the shot with X/A if your stamina is getting low and start over. I found it easiest to aim and let the now sway on its own to my target and then letting go. If you try to move the bow yourself and it jerks slightly then your shot fucked. Also, read the info for the bow. I was using too.high a level a bow and kept injuring my arm. And also there’s a sweet spot for letting go. As soon as your drawn back all the way let to. Don’t hold too long. And just a tip, find the treasures using maps asap. Good ass armour. And get strength up. I can carry 206lbs right now. So Fucking helpful. 
We don’t know that better bows don’t. Or once you’re maxed out it might. I honestly don’t find the how that hard. It goes where you aim the tip of arrow. Depending on.bow and arrow the arrows might drop.faster. and your how level. I couldnt just pick up a bow today and hit targets bc they the bow has a sight. Lol.
If you think Archery is broken late game, try horseback archery with the Knight perk. If you persue the bow path in this game you will give up on melee combat all together. You can even one shot the boss during the cuman campagin. Posion a greater peircing arrow and shoot him in the face. One shot one Kill. I’m using a yew longbow with greater piercing arrows and often time I shoot from so far away I will kill them all before they reach me. Like It’s not fair, what really broke the game for me was invading the cuman camp and killing them all with a bow. “Don’t do anything risky Henry”
it is better with a higher archery skill but bug which prevents you to get higher archery skill makes archery not usable only maybe for hunting like rabbits and other stuff 
if you play game on PC lock and pocket picking is very easy so like always ps4 and xbox was left with shitty gaming experience

I shot runt in the face and killed him with one shot after he pounded me with his sword, I also killed the whole bandit camp on my scouting mission with the long bow and better piercing arrows, the bow is op when you level it up.
