Launcher always uses system drive (C:\) for download

I didn’t found this issue listed, so hopefully it is not a duplicate.

I run the launcher to install the game and select a non-system drive as a target. However, the installer files are still downloaded somewhere to the system drive (and I can’t even find where). Which is a big issue for me, because I don’t have the necessary space on this drive.

How to reproduce:
Try to install the game to another drive (say, E:). Watch as free space on C:\ is disappearing, while E:\ is not touched.

@DrFusselpulli

can you confirm this bug? Or is it new?

Well, yes. This is kind of true. Installtion is on C:\ only right now. We may should change this in the future. Thanks for this input.

Hello everyone,
sadly I am not able to install the Beta, since the installer always tells me that there is not enough disk space on my HDD, which is completely wrong, since I have about 133 GB of free space. I also tried to install on my SSD with roughly 50 GB of free space, but it does not work either.
Anybody else got this problem? Could not find anything about it on the forums, sorry if this is a duplicate.
Greetings from Germany,

I think that game is always trying to install on your C: drive.

Do you have enough space there?
Can you post a screenshot of the error message?

Ok, for my first two attempts to reproduce this bug, I was confronted with a request error after trying to login.

Since it worked the third time I logged in, I can now show you what the error messge looks like.
Sorry, it’s in german. If you don’t understand what it says, here’s a rough translation: “Not enough free disk space on HDD. Try to free up some space and try again.”

If the problem really is, that I can’t install the game, because it wants to store temporarily downloaded data on my C: drive, I am probably stuck and can’t test the Beta at all, since there is no way for me to free up any space on C:.
Any suggestions on what I could try to circumvent this issue?

every time i try i get a notification saying free up some space on the disk
How much do i need to be free?

Its because launcher will always for some reason try to download to C: drive.

Same problem here. Cannot install the beta because there is no way I can make 20gb extra free space on my small SSD C:. Hope this get’s changed so we can change the download location and participate as Kickstarter-backers in the beta.

No worries, fix is being worked on.

Hey i got the beta installing the launcher it gets to half way says i dont have enough space i have over 300g of space on my hardrive retry five times same thing happens. got my brand new external hard drive try it on there same thing please help

Hi there, maybe this helps fixing the issue for the devs.
I encountered the same problem, but with enough free space on drive C:
However, I have a RAM disk set up as drive B:, and obviously, the installer unpacks the game to B: then.
So I assume it always uses the first available drive letter, in my cae B: (with only 2GB of size).
Luckily I can simply remove the RAM drive temporarily…

Ah, just saw that it simply always unpacks to the Windows %TEMP% folder… in my case set to the RAM disk on B:
So maybe specifying another path for the Windows TEMP folder might be a temporary solution.

UPDATE: Just confirmed in my case. Change the Windows TEMP folder location (temporarily) to a path with enough free space on that disk. Don’t forget to logout for the new path to get effective.
Hope this helps you guys until an official fix is available.
Cheers

how do you specify another path for the temp folder?

You can easily google this, for example: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-files/change-location-of-temp-files-folder-to-another/19f13330-dde1-404c-aa27-a76c0b450818?auth=1
It is an environment variable that needs to be changed.
Simply open the windows start menu and type “environment variables” (or the translation to your language, for me it is “Umgebungsvariablen”).
Locate the TEMP and TMP variable, change the pathes.
Make a backup of the old path!
Log out and log in again - should be done.
