Let There be CAPES

CryEngine is able to simulate cloth in real-time

but the simulation of cape is still more complex than mere cloth in the wind I guest :stuck_out_tongue:

They were used in civlian duels, I think I already provided enough sources
Maybe they were a lot less used on a battlefield since, I guess (and this is a personal guess, so I may be wrong), they were a lot harder to use due to mobility issues, but they definetely were used to fight in a civilian context.

I’m not saying they MUST be included. For sure their use in combat would be the icing on the cake. I’m only saying that, should the devs think to include them, they would.not be wrong.

I will share this proof of cloaks’ usefulness made by an experienced reeanactor, which prettymuch says “cloaks are awesome” in 5 minutes relating to various aspects of cloak-wearing, even in combat. video

your sources showed reenactments of duels from a different era using completely different combat techniques and weapons. can you see why that is not a good example?

tbh that’s almost as bad as the guy asking for black people in the game.

As italian i can tell you that the “Flos duellatorum” battle teqnics book from 1406 (ca.) there you dont find any cape tecnics.
But you can see from the type of comic style made book a lot of jiu-jitsu-look alike moves quite impressive ones.

It seems you didn’t read the research I posted on this post (same thread, above, near the beginning). I would be glad if you could read it  The videos were meant to disrupt the “capes can’t be used in combat” assumption, which is wrong in my hopinion.

I would like to see this technique in some game, but I’m not so sure about Kingdom Come. There aren’t any sources for Bohemia and this particular technique. Wearing heavy cloak in combat is useless, using it is great but tied to specific style of swordfighting or fencing. Few years ago we tried this technique with roman equipement - gladius and sagum (roman cloak) and it was very interesting but unpractical for roman reenactment.

Even by wrapping it around your arm just to protect it from cuts?

Do you mean “wearing the cloak in combat” part or the roman experiment part?

Yes. But clearly I misunderstood
I thought you were trying to use it “actively”. By just wearing it, yes, I see they become more an obstacle than not.

P.S. I’m not so sure, but I think capes should be somewhat shorter than cloaks, so that they aren’t such a big problem. But this is a speculation of mine, so don’t take it for granted.

True, terminology is pain. I suppose that cape is the thing, which just covers your shoulders and has a hood. Cloak is much larger and was used to wrap your entire body and protect you against cold. It could have hood. I guess.

Here is wikipedia link for cape, for what it’s worth. But maybe we’re going really off topic

it doesn’t mention anything about capes being used in 1403 bohemia. in fact, it says specifically that they found no evidence of its use prior to 1500s.

so again, i don’t understand why you want to see capes used as a tool of combat when contemporary sources don’t mention it, and your own research says it wasn’t used during the time period the game takes place.

Maybe i mis-explained myself again.

I’m not saying that capes should be used like videos showed, which I know are from a later period and a different location. But wrapping a cape around an arm to protect it from cuts is documented since the Roman Empire.

However, I think that it’s enough talking about this. I think I provided enough sources, but for sure I won’t be mad if someone doesn’t agree with me. It’s the beauty of having different opinions

The first act takes place in summer. As someone mentioned, cloaks were used mainly for protection against cold, bad weather or strong wind. But those conditions will be rather rare. So according to common sense if I were a medieval citizen in average Bohemian summer, I wouldn’t have any need to use it most of the time. So question is whether it is worth to implement it for that 10% remaining causes. I’m sure that if some other act will take place during a winter, they will implement it, but otherwise there is no need for it.

And Cloaks. Cloaks look BOSS. Then you can all Aragorn on peoples asses

It would be cool, if people wore capes only when it rains, or at night.

I don’t know about the weather in Bohemia but I suppose if it didn’t rain that much in Summer then it might not be worth the effort of implementing full physics cloaks.
